Course Description
is designed to introduce students to the fundamental attitudes, behaviors,
and habits needed to maintain employment in their career choice and make career advancements. Students
should anticipate school-based learning activities including work ethic development, job-seeking skills,
decision-making skills, and self-management. Formal career planning and development of knowledge
regarding transition planning begins in this course and continues throughout the strand of Occupational
Preparation Courses.

Appearance
-A professional is neat in appearance. Be sure to meet or even exceed the requirements.

Reliability
-Show confidence but not cockiness. Be polite and well-spoken. Keep your calm, even during tense
situations.

Demeanor
-As a professional, you will be counted on to find a way to get the job done. Respond to people
promptly and follow through on promises in a timely manner.

Accountability
-Professionals are accountable for their actions at all times. If you make a mistake, own up to it and
try to fix it if possible. Don't try to place the blame on others.

Communication
-Working effectively with others builds necessary relationships/partnerships. Be thoughtful in
your written, verbal, and non-verbal communication. Use appropriate volume, pitch, and pace when speaking.
Don’t just hear.
Listen
. Provide feedback. Be clear. Be willing to clarify. Display confidence. Be willing to work
with a partner and team. Make presentations relevant to the whole audience. Use visuals. Stay on topics and
avoid unnecessary repetition. Be appreciative.

-Tell the truth. Stand up for what is right. Treat each person as an individual and respect his/her rights.
Show up on time. Don’t use your position to advance yourself at the expense of others.

Maintaining Poise
-A professional must maintain his poise even when facing a difficult situation. For example, if
someone treats you unfairly or in a hostile way, you should not resort to the same type of behavior.

Organization
-A professional can quickly and easily find what is needed. Your work area should be neat and
organized. Only carry what is needed for a productive school day.

Competence
-Professionals strive to become experts. Take your coursework seriously. Ask relevant questions.
Participate in practice sessions. Attend tutoring sessions. Meet or exceed mastery level (80%).

Goal Focus-
In the business world, setting and achieving goals is what defines success. Set realistic goals (both
short and long-term). Establish priorities. Find motivation. Accept temporary setbacks. Monitor your progress.
Be willing to change direction.
