Quarter 1

1. Matter: Properties and Change
   1. Air is a substance that takes up space and has mass.
   2. Compare solids, gases, and liquids.
   3. Summarize the effects heating and cooling has on matter.
2. Energy: Conservation and Transfer
   1. Rubbing objects together results in friction.
   2. Convection & Conduction

Quarter 2

1. Force and Motion
   1. Effects of Earth’s gravity on the motion of objects on/near Earth.
   2. Applied force results in a change of an object’s speed and/or direction.
   3. Varying speed will affect the time it takes an object to travel a particular distance.
2. Earth in the Universe
   1. Earth is part of a solar system.
   2. Shadows are caused due to the position of the sun.

Quarter 3

1. Earth Systems, Structures, and Processes
   1. Compare Earth’s saltwater and freshwater.
   2. Compare Earth’s land features (volcanoes, mountains, valleys, canyons, caverns, islands).
2. Ecosystems
   1. Parts of a flowering plant and the function of each part.
   2. The life cycle of a flowering plant.
   3. How environmental conditions affect the life of a plant.
   4. How the properties of soil determine the ability of a plant to grow and survive.

Quarter 4

1. Structures and Functions of Living Organisms
   1. Compare the different functions of the skeletal and muscular systems.
   2. Explain why the skin is necessary for health and protection.
