Health science is one of the largest industries in the country, with more than 11 million jobs, including the self-employed. Wage and employment in the health services industry is projected to increase more than 14 percent through 2028 adding 1.9 million new jobs.
The human and social services career cluster spans a wide range of opportunities. The bottom line, you should enjoy working with people. From cosmetology to social services a career in human services will have you interacting with and helping others. These careers will have you learning something new each day, meeting different people all the time, and problem-solving.
The Human & Social Services career cluster prepares learners for postsecondary credentials and careers in occupations that support the everyday functioning of society and individual well-being, including careers in social work, counseling, dietetics and nutrition, athletic training, cosmetology, aesthetics, and barbering.

Barbering
Barbering focuses on the skills and knowledge needed for individuals interested in careers within the barbering industry. Course content provides students with the opportunity to acquire fundamental skills in barbering theory while applying technical skills related to safety, principles of hair, nail structure, and scalp care. Students may acquire hours transferable to a postsecondary institution for completion of hourly requirements needed to sit for the Tennessee Cosmetology and Barber Examiners examination.

Diagnostic Services
Diagnostic Services is designed to prepare students to pursue careers in the fields of radiology, medical laboratory, optometry, and other patient diagnostic procedures. Upon completion of this course, proficient students will be able to describe new and evolving diagnostic technologies, compare and contrast the features of healthcare systems, explain the legal and ethical ramifications of the healthcare setting, and begin to perform foundational healthcare skills. In addition, students will have the option to complete a clinical internship.

The Emergency Services program of study is designed to prepare students to pursue careers in the fields of emergency medicine. Upon completion, proficient students will be able to identify careers and features of the EMS system; define the importance of workforce safety and wellness; maintain legal and ethical guidelines; correlate anatomy and physiology concepts to the patient with a medical or traumatic injury; and perform EMS skills with a high level of proficiency. If taught with an EMT instructor, students will be given the opportunity to sit for the National Emergency Medical Responder certification.

Nursing Services
Nursing Services is designed to prepare students to pursue careers in the field of nursing. Upon completion of this program, a proficient student will be able to implement communication and interpersonal skills, maintain residents’ rights and independence, provide care safely, prevent emergency situations, prevent infection through infection control, and perform the skills required of a nursing assistant. Students will log forty hours of site-based clinical work with at least 24 of those hours spent in a long-term care facility as part of the Level 4 course.

Sport and Human Performance
Sport and Human Performance is designed to prepare students to pursue careers in kinesiology and exercise physiology services. Upon completion, proficient students will be able to apply concepts of anatomy and physiology, physics, chemistry, bioenergetics, and kinesiology to specific exercise science contexts. Through these connections students will understand the importance that exercise, nutrition, and rehabilitation play in athletes or patients with debilitating or acute metabolic, orthopedic, neurological, psychological, and cardiovascular disorders.

Therapeutic Services is designed to prepare students to pursue careers in fields of dentistry, pharmacology, nutrition, or rehabilitation. Upon completion of this program, a proficient student will be able to identify careers in therapeutic clinical services; assess, monitor, evaluate, and report patient/client health status; and identify the purpose and components of treatments. Students have the option to take part in a clinical internship at the end of this program of study.
