HOLES
Author: Louis SacharPublisher: Bloomsbury Publishing PlcISBN: 9781408865231Category: Children > Young Reader > Story Book Hey, you! Now you’ve seen the book title. Why are you still there sitting standing gaping daydreaming pondering? Yes, stop that skyping video gaming selfie-ing facebooking instagramming snapchatting online-picture shopping bubble tea drinking and go grab that book. Because it is that good and it’s screaming for attention. My cousins recommended this book to me when I was young. They raved on and on about it. I was sceptical. How can a book with the title as simple as the word “holes” be any good? But I picked it up anyway. And immediately, I was tranced. After that, I know: you should never judge a book by its cover. Literally. This book is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats. Due to his extraordinarily bad luck, he is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention centre in the middle of the desert. Every morning before dawn, the boys are to set out and dig a hole in the long-dried up riverbed. They were constantly reminded that the digging was the way for them to “build character”. But Stanley soon realises that everything is not as simple as it seems. What I like about reading, especially novels, is that feeling of triumph at the very end when you finish a book. To be able to go through an entire epic adventure, and to learn something new from the characters and their experiences, is something to be jubilated about. And Holes fulfilled that experience. Holes is an amusing, exhilarating and moving read. It’s not just about digging holes, it’s about filling them too. It’s about defeating fate. It’s about fighting for something you believe right. I can’t say anymore without giving away the plot, so I’ll stop. Do you remember Hermione Granger carrying a beaded bag in The Deathly Hollows that has an Undetectable Extension Charm put on? This book is like that bag, a never-ending supply of things worth our time thinking about. Yes. I’m raving. I’m boasting. Don’t believe me? See for yourself.HOLES
