Sight words are words that students should know by "sight" without having to sound them out. They are an important part of first grade.

Spelling Pattern Groups

  • Short Vowels (i.e. "a" in "apple", "e" in "egg")

  • Digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh, qu)

  • Long vs. Short Vowels (if there is a magic/silent e at the end of a word, it makes a long vowel sound (i.e. "a" in "ape" vs. "a" in "apple"))

  • Long vs. Short Vowels (both the silent/magic e and vowel teams can create a long vowel sound (i.e. "meet" and "athlete" both have the long "e" sound while "egg" does not))

  • Other Vowel Patterns (oi/oy, ou/ow, i-e/ie/igh/)
