ELA/Reading

Language Arts:

Second Grade students will work on Language Arts every day starting the first week of school. Once a week they will be tested on the language arts covered in the worksheets for the week.

Reading: Students will learn how to analyze and annotate fiction and nonfiction texts. They will work on finding the main idea and using the text to answer questions and writing prompts. We will be using Benchmark and a variety of other stories & texts. Benchmark is a program that is designed for students to learn how to read, annotate, and take notes about what they are reading.  

Phonics: UFLI Foundations is an explicit, systematic phonics and foundational reading program. UFLI follows a consistent, predictable routine that covers phonemic awareness, visual sound drills, blending, and word building. 

Writing: This year your child will be working on opinion, narrative, and informational writing. 

Grammar: We will focus on various 2nd grade grammar skills each week. There will be a weekly test covering grammar skills for the week as well as skills we have learned.
