How should I first begin to teach my child to write?
*With sticks, and fingers, and salt, and paint and playdough! Break your crayons so they are smaller! Use tiny pencils, crayons and chalk bits. SCRIBBLE!!! Scribbling is valuable. Use tips from your Sensory Handout (October Parent Meeting).
How should I encourage my child to write?
*Keep it fun! BUILD letters out of things, curved and straight. Use different media: paint, salt, glue, playdough, scented markers…whatever it takes!
Should I use workbooks with my child?
*Hands-ON is always better. ALWAYS. Worksheets are good for demonstrating mastery, not gaining mastery. Worksheets make good practice of familiar skills. Keep in mind is this benefiting my child?
Should I NEVER use workbooks?
*You can use workbooks when your child shows an interest and ability…just NEVER use them for a replacement of hands-on work or to introduce a brand-new skill.
How should my child be writing his or her name?
*UPPERCASE first letter of name, lowercase all other letters of name. No exceptions. This is the ‘Kindergarten way’!
How do I teach writing names or other letters?
*Dotted letters for tracing are NO LONGER USED. Use a highlighter pen or a gray pencil stroke and have your child trace over that with a small pencil, crayon or slim marker.
Where do we start our letters?
*At the TOP! Your child should be able to sing a song about this for you that we will learn in Preschool.
