Taonga o Cloverlea

Pikitia Pakitara o Cloverlea

This taonga was unveiled on 13th November 2018.

The three green triangles represent the ranges Ruahine, Apiti and Tararua. The koru designs with the community fingerprints represent the waterways and represent the water falling. The use of colour represents the continual climb we all do as we continue through life and work toward developing our own personal excellence.

The three shapes are known as platonic shapes and these shapes have many representations. It refers back to the three baskets of knowledge - Kete Tuauri, Kete Tuatea and Kete Aronui. Inside each kete are birds that are well known within Aotearoa

The Fantail is recognised as the messenger and the purple is the reference to water. This water recognises the continuity as people enter and leave our school.

The Owl represents knowledge with the colour of the kete representing fire. The fire is demonstrating the idea of wananga (being together), learning together and the partnership that the community brings.  There originally was supposed to be a Huia bird in the third kete  as a representation of Rangitāne, however, as the artists were painting, a Tui was continually flitting around. The kete colour of the Tui is a reference to freedom and flow.

The ‘LEGEND’ concept represents our school values - Ārahi (Lead), Kairangi (Excellence), Nahanaha (orGanised),  Manawaroa (rEsilience), Kotahitanga (iNclusive) and Rae Pakari (Determined).

This mural was designed and painted by Massy University Māori graduate students Luther, Jess and Teaomana.

Kōwhaiwhai o Cloverlea

These kōwhawhai were created by the 2023 Ruahine LEGENDs. Each Ruahine class worked with Matua Craig Kawana learning about kowhaiwhai meaning, tikanga and creation process.

Koiri - Rūma Rima

The waves of knowledge and learning that continue on indefinitely. This is the journey that all of our learners take and the mirrored waves opposite are the learning of others alongside us, in our akomanga, and in the school. We all learn and flourish at different paces and we respect the different learning rates of each other.

Ngutukākā - Rūma Ono

The colours - red (represents the current LEGENDs who have created the design), white (the future generations of Cloverlea kids) and black (the past Cloverlea LEGENDs that supported them). This panel is them talking to the future generations. The overall design, Ngutukākā represents a meeting place and hospitality. They knew it was going to be going outside the hall and want it to be there to greet manuhiri.

Niho Taniwha - Rūma Whitu

When our class first started discussing our panel with Whaea Sequoia, we brainstormed words that we thought described our class. The Legends came up with words such as “unique”, “weird”, “different”, and “crazy”. Whaea Sequoia said these words translated nicely to the Māori word “whanoke”. After further discussion, we were able to link this to the Niho Taniwha pattern. Niho taniwha translates to taniwha teeth. The triangle shape of the niho taniwha represents strength and stability. The repetitive pattern symbolises whakapapa, stories, histories and myths passed down over time.

The colours: red and green represents our Cloverlea School colours. Yellow represents the bright future looking forward to the future Cloverlea School LEGENDs.

Mango Pare - Rūma Waru

Mango Pare represents tenacity and strength. They have linked it to our value Excellence and rEsilience. We chose this one as it represents the strength and the journey each LEGEND had to get to Year 6.

Tāwhirimātea - Ruma Iwa

Rūma Iwa spent a while thinking about different patterns that represented us as a class, a LEGEND jokingly said we should choose Tāwhirimātea as “sometimes we can be calm like a gentle wind but we can also be crazy”. Although we initially laughed and jokingly agreed with the idea, the more we thought about it, the more we agreed it perfectly represented our class.

Tāwhirimātea, atua of the weather. Our inspiration behind choosing Tāwhirimātea was much like Manawatū’s ever changing weather, Rūma Iwa has our easygoing, laid back, cool, calm side, picture a nice, sunny evening with a gentle breeze. But in an instant, we can get loud, crazy and wild like strong gale force winds, heavy rain and crashing waves.
