In the USA, bachelor's degrees typically take 4 years to complete. American students often have quaite a flexible curriculum, with general education requirements and the ability to choose majors later.
The US academic year generally runs from September to May, with various term structures like semesters, quarters, or trimesters.
US students often have a lot of flexibility in choosing electives and exploring different subjects before declaring a major.
Students in the USA typically choose their majors at the end of their sophomore year, which is usually around the second year of their four-year bachelor's degree program. This timing allows students to explore various subjects and interests during their first two years of college before committing to a specific field of study.
Most subjects can be studies at undergraduate level. However there are exceptions, two of which are listed below. You need to carry out your own research.
Law:
You cannot study law as a full undergraduate degree program in the USA. In the United States, law is exclusively a graduate-level field of study. To become a lawyer in the USA, you must first complete a bachelor's degree in any discipline and then pursue a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, which is a three-year graduate program.
Medicine:
You generally cannot study medicine as a standalone undergraduate degree. Medicine is a graduate-level field, and students must first complete a bachelor's degree before applying to medical school. However, there are exceptions in the form of combined BS/MD or BA/MD programs, which allow students to begin medical education directly after high school and integrate undergraduate and medical studies.
Combined BS/MD or BA/MD programs
These programs combine a bachelor's degree with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, typically completed in 6-8 years. Examples include:
6-Year Programs: University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, Hofstra/Northwell School of Medicine13.
7-Year Programs: CUNY School of Medicine, Florida International University, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School13.
8-Year Programs: University of Cincinnati, Case Western Reserve University, Baylor College of Medicine3.
Pre-med track
Alternatively, most students in the U.S. follow a pre-med track during their undergraduate studies. This involves completing prerequisite courses (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) while majoring in any subject. Popular universities for pre-med include Harvard, Duke, and Johns Hopkins
