Friday, October 23rd:
Today was a review day where we reviewed 3.3 on estimating square roots of non-perfect squares, and section 3.1 on finding area of squares, finding side lengths of squares, and solving word problems involving squares.
Students then completed a 3.3 worksheet in class.
Your homework this weekend is to study Sections 3.1 and 3.3 for your in class assignment on Monday, October 26th.
Thursday, October 22nd:
Today we looked at Section 3.3 (gr. 8 text) on Estimating Square Roots of non-perfect squares. We used number lines to estimate square roots of non-perfect squares, then completed the 3.3 Extra Practice sheet and corrected most together.
Please finish the 3.3 Extra Practice this evening if you didn't finish in class.
Reminder that your next assignment is on Monday, October 26th, and will cover Sections 3.1 and 3.3.

Tomorrow we will look at this section again (how to use prime factorization to determine if numbers are perfect squares, and finding area of squares and side lengths of squares).
Thursday, October 15th:
We wrote our test on Chapter 2 today. Reminder that tomorrow we will start a new chapter on squares and square roots. This is not in your textbook, so no need to bring textbook to class for the next while.
Have a great evening!
Wednesday, October 14th:
Students completed a formative quiz for warm up today, checking on their understanding of Section 2.3 (Add, subtract, multiply, divide rational fractions), and the word problem types we learned yesterday. We corrected it together.
Then, students had 30 minutes to work on the Chapter 2 Review from the textbook. I assigned p. 82-83 #6, 9-11, 13, 14, 16, 17. Please complete at least up to #14 for homework this evening. This is in preparation for your full Chapter 2 Test tomorrow!

Thursday, October 8th:
Today we looked at Section 2.3 in more detail, completed Examples 2 and 3 from this section in the textbook. Students then worked on a handout on multiplication of rational fractions and division of rational fractions. We corrected in class as well. I was so proud of how hard all groups worked today! Well Done! If you did not finish at least 10 problems of multiplication and 10 problems on division, you should do this for homework!
Test on Chapter 2 - Sections 2.1-2.3 will be next Thursday, October 15th. You can start reviewing this weekend!
Have a great evening!
Wednesday, October 7th:
In-class assignment day - On Sections 2.1 & 2.2.
Students then had ~20 minutes to complete their "What Do Hairdressers Do?" worksheet on subtracting mixed numbers (from yesterday). Please complete this sheet this evening if you didn't finish it over the past two classes.
Tomorrow we will multiply and divide fractions with negative signs in them. (Section 2.3 from textbook).
Tuesday, October 6th:
Reminder to study and practice for your 2.1 & 2.2 Assignment tomorrow.
Today in class we started Section 2.3. We added and subtracted fractions and mixed numbers with negative signs in them. We learned to re-write the question, change mixed numbers to improper fractions, move negative signs to the top, and find common denominators. We did several questions as a group, then students had 35 minutes to practice on their own, while I circulated to help.
The fraction sheet we did in class today was called "What Do Hairdressers Do?" It will be homework for tomorrow evening if you don't finish in class before then.
Tomorrow we will write our assignment (should take 40 minutes) and have the remainder of class to work on the sheet from today.
Have a great evening!
Monday, October 5th:
We worked on Section 2.2 for the second day. We completed a warm-up by doing 4 of the more challenging word problems together, then students completed a 2.2 Worksheet. We also corrected most of this in class.
Reminder that your next assignment is on Wednesday, on Sections 2.1 & 2.2.
Friday, October 2nd:
Today we began Section 2.2 on Problem solving with rational numbers in decimal form. We completed examples 1-3 together, then students worked on p. 60 #4, 6, 8, 10-12. Please finish these if you did not finish in class today.
Have a great weekend!
Tuesday, September 29th:
In class today we briefly reviewed what we did yesterday, on Section 2.1, by completing 4 slides together. Students then had 45 minutes to write their fractions assignment on review material from grades 7 and 8.
No homework this evening, but you could review what we have covered in Section 2.1 so far.
Next assignment will be on Sections 2.1 & 2.2 and will be written either Tuesday, October 6th or Wednesday, Oct. 7th. We will know more at the end of the week!
Have a great evening!
Monday, September 28th:
We started Section 2.1 today on Rational Numbers. We learned the difference between rational and irrational numbers and completed Examples 1-3 together from the textbook. Students had 30 minutes to complete p. 51-52 #4, 7, 8, 12, 14, 16. Please complete these questions if you did not finish in class today.
Reminder tomorrow we will write an in-class assignment on fractions: adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, order of operations.
Have a great evening!
Friday, September 25th:
Today we looked at order of operations with fractions, then students logged on to Matific for the first time! Students began working through Adventure Island which levels them based on their ability to answer a variety of mathematical questions.
Students are welcome to use Matific as much as they like at home, and we will use it periodically in class as well.
Thursday, September 24th:
We reviewed multiplication of fractions (including cross canceling) today, followed by a lesson on division of fractions and mixed numbers. Please complete the 2 sided worksheet from class today if you did not finish.
Your next assignment is on our review of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of fractions, as well as order of ops. It will be written in class Tuesday, Sept. 29th.
Please also purchase a scientific calculator for next Monday when we start Chapter 2 on Rational Numbers (9N3).
