In Case you Missed it...
If you weren't able to make Meet the Teacher night on September 14th, here are the important things we covered!
NEW IN GRADE 4...
In grade 4 your students will begin to learn a new language- French. They are taught French by Mme. Campbell (grade 7 homeroom teacher) for one hour every second day.
They will also learn new concepts in Math such as fractions, decimals, multiplication to 10, division, and mental math strategies or "NEW MATH". They will learn how to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication in ways that you (or I) were likely never taught. They may even get to teach you a new thing or two! Some kids love it, and completely switch to doing it this way compared to the old "write it out, carry the one" way. And some kids will stick to the old method, and that's completely fine! The point is for them to have different strategies in their toolbelt that they can use when needed!
HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS...
Most of the work we do in school, will stay in school! However, students will be expected to read for 15 minutes every single night. Extra reading will help students in so many ways and build healthy habits. They can do this afterschool, before school, or even before bed if they'd rather! As long as it gets done (as often as possible).
I also will assign a small portion of Math to do each night. These are REVIEW concepts, to help consolidate their learning, and to help you at home to keep up with what we're learning. They will receive their math homework on Monday and it is due back on Friday. The students know that they can do a little each night, or do it all in one night, or divide it between two nights, whatever suits their schedules best! As long as I get it back Friday morning, I am happy! :)
They will also have a word list to practice. They will keep the same words for two weeks and then have a spelling quiz on them. After the quiz they will get NEW words to practice. They can practice these nightly, every second night, or however you see fit. Some weeks may be harder than others.
Most importantly- PLEASE SIGN THEIR AGENDAS. Whether they were able to get the work done or not, throw some initials down for them. Sometimes I will send notes or forms home in their homework agenda, and I need to know that the agendas are being checked. I also check agendas EVERY SINGLE MORNING (besides Mondays) so if you have something you need me to know regarding afterschool plans, you can write it in there!
BEHAVIOR PROGRAMS
I run two behavior programs in my class. One is a role model clip chart, and one is a ticket draw. Both of these programs reward your students for good behavior. Students work hard to try and get up the clip chart to the "role model" status. They can fill you in on these programs, just ask them! They're well aware! :)
CONTACT ME
Please never be afraid to contact me.. about ANYTHING!
The best way to contact me is by email nnwalsh@edu.pe.ca. I will ALWAYS respond to an email if I see it, even if it is a quick response. Therefore, if you don't get a response, I didn't see it. If you have a change to the afterschool plans, you can email me and if I see it, I will respond. If you don't get a response, call the office just to be safe.
Also, if there is anything going on at home that may affect your student's behavior or their ability to focus in class, please, PLEASE let me know. You don't have to let me know the details, but a quick little "handle with care today" note would be so helpful. Even as something as "my child didn't sleep much last night- handle with care today", could be helpful to us all!
