First Two Days - our school year started with two very packed days! It was wonderful to meet, learn more about students, and I look forward to a great year ahead!
Ms. Kelly - Yesterday (Friday) afternoon Ms. Kelly, the school guidance counsellor visited 6B and provided students with a great presentation on positive affirmations, a useful conversation to start the year and beneficial for all.
Our Class - our class has three educational assistants assigned to 6B - Ms. Danielle is with our class all day, Ms. Taylor is with us in the mornings, and Ms. Lora is with 6B in the afternoons. Their experience and expertise will be incredibly beneficial!
Math - I cannot stress enough how important it is that students know their math facts within 3 to 6 seconds. I have sent home flash cards for students to keep at home to practice. As well, students will soon be receiving XtraMath.org & Boddle Learning Accounts that they will be able to use at home & at school to practice & help master math facts. Our first Foundational Learning is on Place Value. We will start by looking at whole numbers over a million and then, we will be looking at numbers to millionths (six places after the decimal).
Language Arts - we have started our Launch Unit! You may hear your child talk about our "Community of Readers." I have already modelled a book talk for students & discussed their first assignment, which is a Book Talk due Sept. 26 (presentations begin) book titles are due to me by Friday, Sept. 12 (less than a week). Students will have time in class to work on this, but are strongly encouraged to practice their presentation in front of family at least three times. This supports the FL (Foundational Learning) for speaking & listening in Grade 6 Language Arts. The full very detailed assignment is posted in Google Classroom!
Integrated Studies - this is made up of our Science, Social Studies, Health, & Art Curriculums. On report cards, you will see the subject listed as Integrated Studies. We are going to start the year off talking about sustainability & this will eventually lead to students creating their own Net Zero Community models!
Google Classroom - students have been given their usernames & passwords (2 copies - 1 for home & 1 for school). When logging into their accounts at home through Google, please be sure to login with their own username followed by @cloud.edu.pe.ca & then, they will be prompted for their password. Take care with passwords, as lowercase l & uppercase I look very similar! As well, zeros and the letter o are sometimes mistaken for the other. I encourage students to try and log in at home. I am not able to do it at school until all responsible use forms have been signed and returned. Students are also asked to sign these, as I talk a lot about proper use of the Chromebooks, what is and isn't acceptable, and students will lose Chromebook privileges if they do not follow the rules! It is about them learning responsibility and taking more accountability for their actions and choices.
Responsibility & Expectations - I have already talked a lot about this with students and will continue to, throughout the year, as we are preparing them for moving on to junior high next year. Expectations will continue to increase through the year, with supports and scaffolding to help!
Leadership - Grade 6 students will have the opportunity to be a part of the Leadership Group at LM. There will be a meeting for students at recess, in the near future. Students will need to write a letter to Mrs. Nogler, as she runs the group. There are so many opportunities for students to partake in with this group & is such a wonderful opportunity that I hope many choose to join!
Paperwork - Wow! I was very impressed with the number of completed paperwork packages & permission forms that came back on day 2! I think it was the most I have ever gotten back right away in all my years of teaching. I only have a few left to get back, so it would be awesome to have those on Monday & we can have all the forms sent to the office!
School Lunches - start on Monday.
Breakfast Program - starts on Tuesday.
Report It! Campaign Returning for the 2025 – 2026 School Year -The Report It! campaign is returning to PSB schools once again for the 2025 – 2026 school year.
Report It! encourages students to report incidents when they need support and to do so in the way that is most comfortable for them. Students can make a report at home, at school, online, or to a community partner. The PSB strongly encourages the promotion of Report It! throughout its schools.
The following informational video can be shared with students and parents to help promote and inform them of the program: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvORGoMMLsk
Online submissions will reopen upon commencement of the 2025 – 2026 school year. Additional information regarding Report It! as well as the link to make a report online can be found at the following link: https://psb.edu.pe.ca/report-it
Open House - Wednesday, September 17 @ 6:30pm. This will be a Meet & Greet format and students can attend with their parents to show them their classroom, where their desk is, and around the school. There will not be a presentation, like in previous years. Any information, I will be sure to add here or to my YouTube page, in case you are not able to attend.
6B Schedule - Our school has a schedule that is on a 6 day cycle. On Days 1, 3, & 5, 6B has French for one hour each day. On Days 2, 4, & 6 they have PE (Physical Education) & Music (30 minutes each - back to back). On Day 5, we have Library Book Exchange time for 15 minutes at the end of the day. Our Math is always in the morning, as is Integrated Studies. Our afternoons are full of Language Arts time.
WIRED Earbuds or headphones - these are not provided by the school and students will need to bring in a pair to use. Please only send headphones that can be plugged into Chromebooks & NOT wireless ones that need to be charged. Thank you for your assistance with this!

Elementary Spelling Inventory - students completed this on Friday & when they are corrected, I will share the results.
Changes in Regular Schedule - if your child has a change in plans from their regular routine, please contact the office directly, as I may not see the email or could be out of the school that day. Contacting the office, ensures that students get to where they are supposed to be going!

Language Arts - our Provincial Assessment will take place next Wednesday, May 14 & Friday, May 16. On the first day, students will begin their first draft. On the second day, they will get to continue to add details, edit, and polish with all the skills we have been working on this year. I encourage you to talk with your child about how they are feeling about this and it would be beneficial for them to practice at home. Key things to discuss: varying sentence types (simple, compound, complex), using figurative language (i.e. similes, metaphors), strong introduction (that includes hook, background, thesis statement, scope - 3 things, and transition sentence), 3 well developed body paragraphs that are from the scope (i.e. think beginning, middle, end or what happened 1st, 2nd, 3rd), strong conclusion with reflection on what they learned, how they were changed by their experience, or how they felt after their experience.
Possible narrative prompts to practice with could be:
The day that changed everything.
Vacation Adventure.
First time they did something.
Students want to make sure to include actions, dialogue that moves the story along or expresses how characters are feeling, adding small movements (what hands, feet, or head is doing), proofread, edit for punctuation, capital letters, end punctuation.
Students may want to practice with a story they already have in their Google Docs, continuing to add supporting details, figurative language, and making sure that they only have relevant details. Also, check for varying sentence lengths, varying sentence starters, punctuation, capital letters, and verb tenses.
There are 5 new strong examples of narratives on Google Classroom. As well, students can review all kinds of writing information on Google Classroom.
Monday,May 5, 2025
LA Assessment - our Provincial Assessment will be on Wednesday, May 14 & Friday, May 16. Ours will be written in the afternoon, due to specialists. We want to have an uninterrupted stretch of time to complete.

HPV 2nd Doses are tomorrow morning. Our class goes @ 8:40 am - we are first up!
Monday, April 28, 2025
Student Vote - our class participated in the Student Vote today. We had our own polling station, with students taking on the roles of poll workers, from handing out ballots, crossing off names, giving out "I Voted" stickers, and counting ballots. All students present were able to vote for the candidate of their choosing for the riding of Charlottetown. It will be interesting to see if the vote lines up with the results tonight!
Students each got to experience putting their ballots in a ballot box, voting behind a tri-fold privacy screen, and marking their ballots with an X for their candidate of choice. A great way for them to be engaged in the Federal election, that lines up with our FL's on citizenship and community.
Cultural Projects - are due Thursday, May 1! Only 3 more days, until projects need to be here at the school.
Math- we are still working on graphing and are currently on Unit 7: Lesson 4. A video for this will be posted soon and students need to watch it for homework this week. There is a lot of information, so please encourage them to watch it multiple times.

We also have worked on identifying run-on sentences (types A & B) and worked on how to fix them. It is so important for students to proofread their work out loud, as this can often be how they "catch" some of these sentences. As well, students have been continuing to edit and revise their writing pieces, focusing on these important skills. Their writing pieces are on Google Docs and I strongly encourage all students to share their writing in progress with you.
Math - students completed Math Check-In #7 today. I corrected them after school and they will be waiting for them when they return on Tuesday! We have moved to Unit 7, continuing look at Graphing. Math - We continue to work on Unit 1 in the Math Book. Students have already explored lessons 1, 2, 4, 5, and have begun lesson 6. Videos for all five of these lessons are on my YouTube Channel. Students are to watch these for HOMEWORK! My YouTube Channel link is: https://www.youtube.com/@GeniusPlusTwins
& there is a playlist created for Unit 1! The videos are also linked below in the update from Saturday.
LA - Students are in the process of editing, revising, polishing their current writing piece. They are working on including figurative language, dialogue, transitional phrasing, and showing, not telling. On Google Classroom, I have posted key information for each of these, with many examples. As well, I have shared samples of scored writing pieces with explanations, as to why they were scored, the way they are. Hopefully, they will gain new ideas and insights from this lesson, that will benefit their writing.
Permission Slips & Topics For Cultural Fair - these are due to Mrs. Davidson tomorrow, Friday, April 4! We are still missing 5 permission forms from our class, so please remind your child to pack their permission slip! Thank you to all those that have returned their signed slips! As for topics, please discuss with your child, as these should be given to me tomorrow, if they haven't already!
Coding - students will have coding time tomorrow. We have been so busy with other work, that students have not have time to complete their LA Booklets & Spelling Work, but that's okay. We will catch up next week! Everyone will get to have coding time!
Saturday, March 29, 2025
Math - we are working on Unit 1 in our Math Textbook. This unit deals with some key Foundational Learnings on Patterns & Relationships. The first three lessons (1, 2, & 4) now have video lessons for students to watch at home. Please make sure that students watch these for homework in the coming week & that they use them to prepare for the future unit test.
Homework YouTube Videos:
Unit 1:
Lesson 1: Input/Output Machines
Lesson 2: Patterns From Tables
Lesson 4: Using Variables to Describe Patterns
Lesson 5: Plotting Points on a Coordinate Grid
Lesson 6: Drawing the Graph of a Pattern
Language Arts - this past week, we have been revisiting perfecting introductory paragraphs. Students need to be sure to include the following types of sentences (in order): hook, background, thesis statement (main idea), scope (3 items), and transition. Samples are on Google Classroom, as is our current prompt. Students will be using the 3 points from their scope sentences to write each of the three body paragraphs, in the coming week. Students are utilizing the printed examples they have been given to assist with the organization of these essays!
Spelling & LA Booklets - students will be continuing to work on the lesson and exercises from last week, in class, as our first week back was packed and we did not have enough time to complete them in school last week.
Cultural Projects - as mentioned in the email last week, students will be completing a cultural project, for class, that they will be presenting to the rest of the class. Projects are to include a trifold backboard display (clear title, headings, pictures, maps, illustrations, diagrams, captions, bullet points), written report to be handed in as well (NOT on the backboard), and may include artifacts/display items. Students will be completing these projects at home. If they need materials printed in black and white or cut with a paper cutter, I am able to help out with this. I strongly encourage students to utilize their Canva accounts to help with visuals for their backboards. Any color printing, will need to be done at home. If you are looking for large display letters or art materials, the Dollarama is great for these, as well as the trifold backboards, that are required. I encourage you to Google and search for sample trifold backboards.
***If students want to enter their projects into the school Cultural Fair, I strongly encourage them to do so, but it is OPTIONAL TO ENTER THE FAIR. All students will complete these projects to meet our grade 6 Foundational Learnings, but they have the choice to enter the fair. Permission Forms for those entering the fair will be going home soon. The Cultural Fair is a great opportunity for students to experience, but it is optional if students want to submit their projects, which they are creating for class. ****

School Delays - 1 Hour Delay – CHARLOTTETOWN FAMILY OF SCHOOLS
If it is announced that schools are on an hour delay, you CANNOT drop your child off until 9:00 am as this is when the school doors will open. Please do not leave your child on the property to stay outside as there is no supervision until 9:00 am. It is the parent responsibility to make sure that plans are in place for childcare during a delay as we do not have before school childcare. Often, there is another announcement at 8:00 am to notify families if schools will remain closed for the day, please listen for this. It is up the parent to know if schools are on an hour delay or cancelled for the day. Delays and cancellations are announced on local radio stations, on the PSB website, the PSB Face Book page.

One that I have shown to the class is Claude.ai It is your choice if you want your child to use this as a tool to support their learning. You would have to sign them up at home, using your cell phone number and enter a verification code, with your child using their school Google account (username@cloud.edu.pe.ca). Friday, October 18, 2024
Google Classroom - please be checking out Google Classroom for information on what was covered this week in school!
Permission Forms - for PG Disney Movies and YouTube Memory Videos, these were sent home on Thursday. Thank you to everyone that has returned them. For the few that are still outstanding, please return on Monday! Reminder: these are your choice and only students given permission will participate in these things, as they are totally optional! I have had a couple of questions reguarding YouTube videos. No student names are included in the video or identifying information, but like anything on the internet, it is possible for others to view. I am extremely cautious with Internet safety with my own children, so I get it! Last year's memory video is posted on our class website (see menu bar at the top), if you were wondering what it might look like. As mentioned in the permission form, photos, video clips, and editing are all done by only myself. I completely understand whatever your choice may be!
Library News - see information at the top of this page. As well, 6B will be visiting the library on Monday, Oct. 21 for a Book Tasting Menu activity.
Spelling - words for next week: bury, weigh, hurry, sleigh, really, display, scurry, freight, release, stray, cushion, proceed, season, explain, creep, propeller, between, maintain
Homework - reminder that students are to be reading every day at home! As well, if students have not yet finished XtraMath they should be practicing their math facts daily at home as well! Furthermore, if you would like, I am posting worksheets for our current foundational learnings in math and language arts in Google Classroom. It is encouraged to review these together at home, so that you can be aware of what students are working on.
HPV Vaccine - a reminder that the first dose of the HPV vaccine will be administered to students that returned permission forms on October 29, right after school started.
Friday, October 11, 2024
Math - XtraMath.org practice is still strongly encouraged for those students that have not mastered all of their math facts. For the current Foundational Learning outcomes that we are working on, please view Google Classroom. For additional practice at home, please be aware that digital copies of our textbook and homework practice book are posted in Google Classroom.
As well, Boddle Learning has assignments for students to work on, as well as fact fluency, online. Students all have accounts & these can be accessed anytime.
Language Arts - We have begun working on our Narrative Writing Unit. Students are encouraged to put more emotion and feeling into their writing. We are working on continuing to add in interesting word choices, descriptive language, take into account their senses to write about their small moment stories, while using their senses, to paint a picture for their readers.
Students have also been working on identifying the main point and supporting details in reading. There is an assignment on Boddle Learning that they can work on.
Upcoming Dates:
Oct. 14 - No Classes (Thanksgiving)
Oct. 17 - Book Buddies
Book Buddies - Our book buddies are Mr. Dowling's class and we meet with them every day 4 for the last class of the day.

Friday, October 4, 2024
Math - students all have access to Google Classroom, using their usernames and passwords. I have put another copy of our math textbook and practice homework book on Google Classroom. You can refer to these if you are looking for material to practice at home. As well, students can all access their Xtramath.org accounts and their Boddle Learning accounts at home. XtraMath practice (math facts for +, -, x, /) daily is strongly encouraged! Boddle Learning contains assignments, from me, that match the current foundational learnings that we are working on in math. Students also have been given practice cards, to be kept at home, for their multiplication facts. Math fact skills are of highest importance to begin with, if your child is struggling.
Language Arts - At this point, students should be writing in full complete sentences, using capital letters when necessary (i.e. beginning of a sentence, names, places, I, days of the week, etc.) and using end punctuation (., ?, !). I am concerned that a number of students have forgotten these things over the summer. However, it is extremely important that full effort is given. It would be wonderful if everyone could do a check-in at home, asking your child if they are always doing these things. The reinforcement would be appreciated.
Stamina - We are working really hard on building our stamina while working. I am reminding students that if students are not doing it here, the work will be sent home to complete there.
Monday, September 30, 2024
Virtual Author Visit - our class was able to partake in a virtual author visit with Nicole Mortillaro on Thursday, September 26. Her book Searching Beyond the Stars: Seven Women in Science Take on Space's Biggest Questions.
Tree Planting - on Wednesday, September 26 our field trip was a huge success. Students did an incredible job planting many trees. They learned the proper technique using newspaper and wood chips. The grade 6 classes were joined by Minister of Education Natalie Jameson, tree expert Bruce Smith, and Mayor of Charlottetown Phillip Brown, as well as, many volunteer from Charlottetown Home Hardware, the sponsor of the tree planting at the Winter River watershed.
National Truth & Reconciliation Day - last week our class learned about how Orange Shirt Day originated, as well, we discussed the meaning of resilience and students were able to artistically represent what it means to them.
Net Zero Community Project - students are encouraged to start taking in materials they would like to use in the creation of our Net Zero Community.
XtraMath - a few students have completed & mastered all of their math facts on XtraMath. Many students are still working through learning and mastering their facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. If you child is still working on these, practice at home, is strongly encouraged. All students can use Xtramath.org at home. The go to the web browser, type in XtraMath.org, they use my email kpspidel@edu.pe.ca, their first name, and their four digit pin (they all have these).
Math - extra practice, if anyone is looking for additional math practice, on what outcome we are presently working on, they can use their Boddle accounts at home and complete the assignments they have been given. This is not required, but if they are looking for extra work, this is available.
Homework - once again, the only thing required for homework is for students to be reading each day, a book of their choice.
Constable Vessey - on Tuesday, Oct. 1, Constable Vessey will be speaking to all of the grade 6 classes. Topics include online safety, street safety, and respect at school and in the community.
Friday, September 20, 2024
Spelling - students were assessed on the elementary spelling inventory this week & will be taking home their results today. Students have recorded words that were tricky on an index card to refer back to when they have extra time to review and practice.
Math - we have completed our math boot camp and are working on our first foundational learning outcome of the year in math. If you wanted to have some sample problems, you can always view the textbook and the practice booklet online in Google Classroom. Your child is able to log into their Google account at home using their school network username and password. All students have been able to access Google Classroom, as they were all given a link in their school email. You can use this at home to access the texts. We have just completed Unit 2 Lesson 1.
Language Arts - I am so pleased to see our community of readers sharing their book recommendations with others and listening to some book suggestions that I have given them. I want to foster a love of reading and everyone is off to a great start! In writing, we will be contining with our series of lessons that introduce students to Writer's Notebook. I am pleased at the progress that I have already observed in students writing stamina and the ideas they are generating. This week students develeoped lists of memories and topics that they are "experts" on. Most days, students are given a writing prompt to work at, as soon as they arrive. The prompts allow students to be creative, use their imagination, an often have a focus on social-emotional learning.
Integrated Studies - this week we have been conducting lots of research on environmentally friendly buildings and gathering lots of information on what makes an ideal net zero community. I will share some of the links in Google Classroom.
Absences - I was out on Monday & Tuesday, due to sickness in my family. Thankfully, everyone is doing much better. I recognize that September can be a difficult month with sickness, but we are over half way through our first month in school!
Reminder - Monday, September 23 is a Professional Development Day for staff and there will be no classes.
Meeting - Tuesday, September 24 all Grade 6 teachers will be attending an in-service for the day on our new Integrated Studies curriculum. If you have immediate concerns on that day, please contact the main office.

Read-Aloud - we are reading City of Ember together as a class. This brought us to the dicussion of electricity and the light bulb. Students got to explore learn about who created the light bulb and this goes along really nicely with the types of sustainable energy that we have been learning about this week.
Integrated Studies - next week we are going to working on our line of inquiry, mentioned below, and moving forward with what our sustable net zero community should look like, what to include, what not to include, and what would we need to do to make it net zero. Our key word that we keep talking about is balance, while also thinking about how we can make things better.
Key terms that we discussed this week include sustainability, carbon neutral, net zero, and carbon negative. We have also started to learn about some of the best practices used in some cities around the world and how they are acheiving net zero. I am encouraging students to continue to think about what they would like to see in the design of the community we will be creating, how we can improve on the design that was completed last year in 6B. What could be better? Different? What new technology could we utilize? How can we make the community be a place that people want to live? I will post some links in Google Classroom, that are informative and engaging.
Google Classroom - all students logged into Google Classroom earlier this week. Signing into Google with their school username and password, they have a link in their School Gmail to our Google Classroom.
Math - next week we continue to work on our Math Boot Camp. As well, all students have XtraMath.org accounts that I encourage them to use every day (about ten minutes) to practice math facts. They use my email (kpspidel@edu.pe.ca), their name, and their pin number.
Language Arts - we had our first book exchange of the year this week and I was so pleased to see that our community of readers were eager to try out book recommendations and suggested authors. It's so encouraging seeing students try out books that are in different genres, than they are typically reading, including, one of my favourites, historical fiction!
HPV Vaccive Forms - I am still missing some forms. Please return them ASAP!
Earbuds/Headphones - a number of students have already taken in a pair of earbuds or headphones. It would be great if you could send a pair in with your child, as these will be very useful for them!
Have a great weekend!

Buses are provided to take students to the site and it will be a fun filled afternoon helping our planet! Please be aware students should wear a cap, sunblock, & bug spray. These are NOT provided!
HPV Vaccine - I am still missing a few permission forms. Please return ASAP, as we need to submit them to the office & Public Health. The first vaccine dose will be given on Tuesday, Oct. 29! That day it is best for students to wear a short sleeve shirt, even if they wear a sweater over it.
Tuesday, September 10, 2024
Health PEI forms for the HPV Vaccine are going home today. There is an information sheet attached and a contact phone number, for our school Public Health Nurse, if you have any questions. It would be ideal if all students could return their signed forms tomorrow! You have the option to select Yes or NO to consenting to the vaccine. Either way, please return!
Monday, September 9, 2024
Ear Buds/Headphones - if you could send in a pair of ear buds or headphones for your child to keep here, that would be very helpful, for when they are using the Chromebooks for reading, writing, or math activities. Please label your child's!
Technology - today, students were all able to access Google Classroom. I have asked them to share this with all of you. You can use their school username and password and their is a link in their school email to take you directly to the classroom. As well, today students all received XtraMath & Boddle Learning usernames and passwords.
XtraMath - students can use my email to log into their account (kpspidel@edu.pe.ca), their first name, and their four digit pin.
Boddle Learning - this highly engaging site is great for students to practice math & language arts!
Mindful Monday - today students started the day with a "Mindful Monday" journal activity. Students described something that makes then happy & why.

Welcome to Week 2!
Math - we are moving forward this week with our math "boot camp," which is a great review for students to be ready to jump into the outcomes for this year.
Reading - on Friday we began talking about "Our Community of Readers." We will continue exploring this over the next few weeks.
Writing - over the next couple of weeks we are lauching Writer's Notebook for the year. We will be completing a series of lessons to set students up for success for the writing units we will be completing this year.
Our Open House (meet the staff event) will happen this Wednesday, Sept. 11 @ 6:30pm. I look forward to meeting all those that are able to attend.
Integrated Studies - we will be launching our new Integrated Studies curriculum this week! Our first line of inquiry will explore "What are the ways that humans and the environment affect one another?" For the first week, we will explore "What relationships we have with land and space?" I'm so excited for students to explore this unit. All students had the opportunity to visit the net zero community model, that my class last year completed. Three videos on that project are linked on the home page of this site and provide a ton of information.

Sun Safety -our virtual presentation on this will be this Friday afternoon.

Grade 6 Closing - will be on Wednesday, June 26 at 11am. If your child is leaving with you after the closing, please let me know!
Reminder - students are asked to wear their LM t-shirts on field trip day & at the closing.
Challenge - Unfortunately, we did not place in the top 3 for our Net Zero Community Project. We did receive an honorable mention. I reached out to Green Learning for feedback on our submission, but they did not provide any. I am so proud of all the hard work that students put into this project and how engaged with Net Zero they are! Lots of learning was gained through this and I couldn't be more pleased with how students did on creating an amazing community. Videos clips and pictures are all included with the three links on the home page of this website. You can share with family and friends, so they can see the amazing work from 6B!

Roma - permission forms will be going out next week for our Roma field trip. The cost for admission per student is $7 (no lunch) or $10 (with lunch). If students chose the lunch option, we will need to provide the numbers next week. The menu for lunch includes heritage bread, vegetable soup, and a cookie. I have heard that their food is delicious! Just a note, that they do not guarantee their menu options to be nut free, so it is best for those with any allergies to not choose the lunch option. There are other treats that can also be purchased there in their shop, if students bring money with them. This trip for our class will be happening on Thursday, June 6.
Grade 6 Closing Reminder - the grade 6 closing is on Wednesday, June 26 @ 11am. We have been asked to tell families to please keep the number of people attending to two people/student. Sunblock - students are spending more time outdoors for Physical Education classes or leadership activities. It would be helpful if they arrived already with sunblock on and also had some in their backpacks, if they need to reapply. The UV index is consistently very high lately and it would be helpful to avoid sunburns and sun damage. June 14 we have the virtual presentation on Sun Safety!
Net Zero Community - I have been getting a number of questions, regarding our Net Zero Community Challenge. I have yet to hear back from them, but do hope to hear some news soon! I will share as soon as I have any information.
Sandspit Field Trip - we have found out the cost of this field trip is $20/student and our date is Friday, June 21! Heat - our classroom is extremely hot! If anyone has any extra fans or a free standing air conditioner around their homes, that they are not using, we could definitely put them to good use in the classroom. As well, it would be a good idea to pack a light t-shirt & shorts in students backpacks. The mornings can still be cool, but by 10am our room turns into a sauna. I have reminded students to think about clothing choices, drink lots of water, and they are all aware that they can splash cold water on their face whenever they need to.
Crowan Writing Contest - just a reminder that all entries are due May 31! Entry is optional, but someone from our class will win $1000 - maybe even more than one person will! There are three prizes of $1000 just for our school!
Evelyn Bradley - On Monday, Evelyn Bradley spoke with our class for an hour. She is a consultant for the PSB & the DELL. The main topic of discussion was on bullying and pointed out to our students how easy it can happen, without even realizing that you may be doing it yourself. Also, there was a large emphasis on the role of bystanders and as leaders in the school, what can our grade 6 students do when they see something that isn't right.

Changes in After-School/Pick Up Plans - if plans change for pick up or bussing, please contact the main office, as I do not always get to my emails through the school day. The only way to be sure, that we will have the information is to provide the information to the main office before 2pm! Thank you for this!

Please also send a lunch with your students on that day, for the picnic, as there will not be time for everyone to purchase lunch. As well, just a reminder, no nuts are permitted!

Neurographic Art - this week students learned and practiced a neurographic artwork. This art form engages both our aesthetic and emotional intelligence, creating calm, and is believe to reduce anxiety. This relatively new art form was designed in 2014 by a Russian psychologist named Pavel Piskarov.
Writing - our persuasive writing unit is underway. Students are encouraged to choose meaningful issues, to them, that they would like to see happen or change.
Math - we are working on Foundational Learning PR1, which is demonstrating an understanding of the relationships within tables of values to solve problems. Extra practice sheets are on Google Classroom, as well all students have assignments on their Boddle accounts. It would be extremely beneficial for students to devote some home time to working on those assignments, as well as on the extra practice worksheets and XtraMath (for those that have not yet completed it).
Visit - on Monday, April 8, the Hon. Natalie Jameson, Minister of Education & Lifelong Learning will be visiting 6B for students to share their Net Zero Community Project with her.
Reminder - on Monday, April 8, we will also be having an early dismissal, where students will be leaving school two hours prior to their regular time. This is due to the upcoming Solar Eclipse. All students have received their Solar Eclipse glasses and they should have been brought home earlier this week. If you haven't seen them, please remind students to check their backpacks.
FYI - We are in the process of scheduling two field trips in June. The first will be to Roma (either June 13 or 14, as they cannot accommodate all three classes on one day) and the second to Sandspit (June 21, which is an awesome way to spend my birthday)!

Your child must attend with you! The weather looks like it is going to cooperate for tomorrow and ANYTIME between 9am and 4pm, you are free to come in (as long as the provincial civil service isn’t delayed – then it would start at the delayed opening time). As already planned, multiple conferences will be happening in the classroom at the same time. If you already signed up for tomorrow, great, but if you weren’t no need to sign up, just come in anytime! All conference materials are ready for your child to take you through how they are doing. As well, if others are in the classroom, still come on in, as Student-Led Conferences allow multiple conferences to happen at once.
Media Release Forms - please sign and return media release forms, from Green Living, for students to be included in the video for our Net Zero Community Challenge.
Net Zero Community Challenge - our model community has been completed and we will soon be submitting our entry into the challenge. Please be sure to check it out when you are in for Student-Led Conferences. It is displayed at the back of our classroom.

There will be a parent-information meeting, for those interested on February 13 from 6pm to 6:30pm, with Mrs. Davidson. The LM Science Fair will be held on Tuesday, March 19, with a storm date of Wednesday, March 20. I have already started discussing some options with students, and have asked them to discuss with you this evening. One site that has lots of really great ideas is Baddle Daddle Do with step by step instructions, materials needed, and the science explanations. They also have a YouTube page that shows many experiments in video form. I would like students to share their topic with me sooner, rather than later, and I will provide time in class for students to do some of their work for their project. Students would be required to bring the materials needed for their project, if they want to use the time in school to work on it.
Net Zero Community - our model is starting to take shape. We still have lots to do, but our vision is starting to show. 6B is really looking at all the details from sustainable energy sources, building materials, transportation, services, and so much more. It's a big project, but I hope one that students will remember as a highlight from this year, with lots of great ideas to take away from it.
What Home Means - all students are entering a contest put on by Habitat for Humanity. The contest sponsor, will donate $10 for each entry received to our local Habitat for Humanity group. Students have the option to submit a poem or an essay on what home means to them. https://meaningofhome.ca/

Sparkling Acheivements - this week we combined a social-emotional learning (SEL) activity with writing and also did a little bit of decorating in our classroom for the upcoming holiday season. To do this students recorded three "Sparkling Acheivements" for 2023. Some great examples were learning new math concepts like converting an improper fraction to a mixed number, mastering XtraMath operation facts, making a sports team, exploring coding on Scratch, learning about Snap Curcuits, or taking on a leadership role in school, like being a library monitor or participating in the Remembrance Day assembly.
Remembrance Day Contest - 6B (our class) swept 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes in the North Shore Community Remembrance Day Essay/Poem contest. Congratulations to all of our writers!
Assembly - our class was well represented in the Remembrance Day ceremony at our school on November 10. Diorama Projects - are due November 27! Students have completed some of their work at school on the actual diorama and writeup, but many still have a lot of work to complete before the due date and may need to complete some of it at home. We will be working on these projects in class on Monday, but then I will have them take them home to put the finishing touches on them. They have been able to use paint, plasticine, coffee sticks/popsicle sticks, and are encouraged to use natural items like rocks, clay, sand, shells, twigs, grass, etc. I am impressed so far by the creativity and effort that I have observed so far! Keep it up!

Thursday, November 2, 2023
Boxes Needed - please send in a box with your child tomorrow. A shoe box is ideal, but we will try and make any box about that size work. We would like it tomorrow because we will be starting to work on our diorama project in Social Studies.
Social Studies Project Topics - ideally students will choose their topic by tomorrow, so that we can start to do some of it here at school. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss this with your this evening, so that you can talk through what would work best to choose for their diorama. An example that we have at school is of a 3D model of the Confederation Bridge. The re is a huge amount of topics on the project page/eras of time to choose from/industries to highlight and more.

Writing - this week in writing, we will have lessons on making comparions, action clues, explaining the sound. These are always great topics for getting students to elaborate on their writing.
Reading - reading daily is always important. A great discussion topic is to talk about with your child is to have them retell what they are reading (plot, sequence, problem/solution), have them make comparisons, interpret relationships, and talk about the main idea in what they are reading or what you are reading together at home.
Missing Book - we are missing our class copy of the book Make A Splash! If you happen to find it at your home, please send it back to school. Thank you!

Go back and REVISE! Things that we can do include brainstorming fancier words, creating images with words, trying out a new lead or ending for our story, describing the problem in our story in a more dramatic way, inserting spicy dialogue, or using the sense to describe our setting.
Read-Aloud - we have started a new chapter book in class called A Night Divided, which is a historical fiction book that has come highly recommended from Mrs. Newson. It is set in the time when the Berlin wall was erected.
Math - we continue to work on Mixed Numbers & Improper Fractions. The worksheets that have been put in the School Work tab have had the settings adjusted, so that you can open them! I needed an extra day to figure out how to share them, but I found the setting and it's all good now. Extra practice on this foundational learning is always encouraged.
Social Media Presentation - tomorrow morning in the mini-gym.
Guest Teacher - Grade 6 teachers will be attending a workshop on STEAM next Thursday, October 19 and I will be absent for the day. Mrs. MacKay will be in for me again.
PD Day - will be held on Friday, October 27 and there will be no classes that day.
Tuesday, October 10, 2023
Math - We completed a mini-lesson ( Page 163 for a sample problem), followed by students being assigned Pages 164 #'s 1-4). Students are learning how to convert a mixed number into an improper fraction and how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number.
Guest Teacher - tomorrow morning I will have a guest teacher in for me, as I have an appointment, but should be back by 11:30am.
Homework - reading, word sort spelling or commonly misspelled word sheet, and Xtramath.
Today, I provided all students with a sheet of some of the most commonly misspelled words. You can view a copy of that under the School Work tab, as well you will see a selection of worksheets for our latest foundational learning in math.

Book Buddies - our class has Book Buddies every Day 1 (including today) with 2D.
Math - today some students were working on completing their orange place value booklets and for those that have finished moved on to working on some assigned Splash Learn assignments. Reminder: All students have had Splash Learn Accounts created for them and the class code and password is posted in Google Classroom. Reminder #2: it is helpful to practice math facts each day and students all have Xtramath accounts that I encourage them to use to build speed and fluency with their facts in addition, subtraction, multipication, and division. Students need my email: kpspidel@edu.pe.ca, their first name, & their four digit pin #'s (which they have) to practice. Once each operation has been mastered they receive a certificate and move on to the next. We have one student that has completed all four operations! Everyone can do it! Reminder #3: Anyone looking to review any material or try our harder concepts can visit KhanAcademy.org
Choir - practice today @ first recess for students in Grades 4, 5, & 6!
Homework Reminder: I always encourage students to read each day and students have the option to review spelling, go on Xtramath, Splash Learn, or Khan Academy for math practice, and practicing writing on meaningful small moment stories (narrative writing) is always an option, if you are looking for something to do!
Wedesday, October 4, 2023
Math - we have continued to work on integers today completing page 81 in our math books and all students are working at their own pace, completing pages 28-31 in the math practice booklet. Just a reminder, that the math book and practice booklet are located in our Google Classroom page (see link at top and students use their own username/email and password to login - their email is their username@cloud.edu.pe.ca).
Today, students had Music & French Specialists. These always occur on Days 2, 4, and 6 of our 6 day cycle. Today, is Day 6.
In writing, we continue to work on meaningful small moment stories. Students may have an idea sparked from an experience they had with a person they care about, something that happened in a particular place, the first time they did something, the last time they did something, a time that they felt they learned something important, and they are always told from their point of view and no one else's. I always encourage students to pay attention to word choice and to try out techniques that we have been studying from other authors, like flashbacks, figurative language, or dialogue.
Library - Students have book exchange today at 12:40 (this time every day 6) and this year Mrs. Newson has asked that students return their books on Day 5, to ensure records are up to date. I will try and include reminders here for that.
Guest Teacher - this afternoon I need to attend an appoinment and Mrs. MacKay will be in for me. She is already familiar with our school and students.
Homework - just a reminder that it's always great for students to have an opportunity to read at home each evening and I strongly encourage this. As well, if they need extra practice on their spelling words, it is always helpful to spend a few minutes (maybe 5) each evening to review these. They could also share with you what pattern the spelling word follows!
Reminder - there will not be classes on Monday, October 9th, due to the Thanksgiving holiday!
Tuesday, October 3, 2023
Earth Rangers - presentation today - great topic to chat about this evening.
Math - we are working on intergers (both positive and negative) and writing them in ascending and descending order. *A Foundational Learning Check-In is fast approaching for our first two FL's of the year.

Xtramath.org - students now all have Xtramath accounts. They need to use my email kpspidel@edu.pe.ca, their first name, and their four digit pin number. It is so important to build fact fluency! A few minutes using this site each day will be extremely helpful!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Yesterday, we had another student's birthday to celebrate, so our singing voices are all warmed up already this year! As well, I'm always encouraging students to sing O'Canada in the morning too and hopefully soon will have everyone singing with me!
Today, we began reading the book Jimmy & Ryan and the Well in Africa that Brought them Together. A great topic of conversation for this evening could be about the luxury of indoor plumbing, ability to go to school, and access to clean water.

Please make sure that your child has sunblock and bug spray with them!
Today, we celebrated a student's birthday and cupcakes were enjoyed! Thank you to the parent that sent them in. They were of course nut-free, which makes it a great time to remind everyone that we are a nut-free school and if you are sending in anything, please make sure that it is nut-free. Note: Tim Horton's Timbits are NOT considered nut-free.

Extra - I have added an "Extra" page to our class website. If you are looking for some extra work for your child or want to challenge them with something more, please see this page. I only have added a few items on it for now, but will continue to add more.
Homework - I would like every student to read each evening. If a students happens to not be using their time in class and does not complete assignments, they will also need to be completed at home, but I am hoping we don't encounter that at all! I keep students working throughout the school day and recognize the importance of family time, play time, and extra-curricular activities after the school day. However, if you are wanting something, be sure to check out the "Extra" page.
Thank you to all that were able to attend the Meet The Staff event yesterday. It was so nice to get to meet many of you!
NUWELCOM - this is a great tool for translating text. It was created on PEI and available for FREE to all Islanders. There is an app that you can download on your phone. You can also visit their website for more information. If you are more comfortable messaging me in your first language, should be not be English, that is okay because I also have the NuWelcom app and can translate messages into English. This is a very useful tool and once again it is FREE to everyone living on Prince Edward Island. You will need to enter your Postal Code when you sign up!
Reach Back - I have added a Reach Back page to our website. I will continue to add in materials to this, but for now there are some great links to some previous Foundational Learnings that some students may benefit from to refresh their skills.

Writing - we are starting our first writing unit on personal narratives, where students will be crafting powerful life stories. Today, we are learning about how examining the work of other writers can help to study what strategies other writers may have utilized, as well as thinking about what they have accomplished already as writers and what their new goals will be for the beginning of the school year.
Homework - it is always encouraged for students to spend time reading every day! If you would like to take some time to discuss any of the work, I have mentioned above at home, this can also be a great added benefit for students. For example, asking your child about their current writing goals can be a topic of conversation around the supper table.
