Students in Grade 2 will engage in daily writing workshops to explore writing with a purpose in multiple genres. Various types of both personal narrative and transactional writing will be practiced over the course of the year. Grade twos learn to use practice oral story telling to help begin to move their words onto the paper. They learn to "write long and write hard" for significant blocks of independent time every day to collect many, many ideas they may want to try out. They learn to stretch their sentences, add to their writing, make changes, take risks with their spelling, use writer's tools, as well as explore feelings and action words to help their reader understand characters or main subjects they want to convey. They also learn to share the writing process through "turn and talks", choosing a final draft piece to polish and publish, as well as share time at the end of every work shop day to celebrate the writing process.
Grade 2 Foundational Learning Outcomes for Writing
Foundational Learnings (FLs) are specific outcomes that are taught early and throughout the remainder of the year, reviewed and assessed consistently, and expected to be mastered for developmental progress to meet grade level requirements by the end of the year. They are the "building blocks" for literacy success if you will. Feel free to review the outcomes below so that you have an understanding of what kind of writing skills we will be working on throughout this year. They may help you make connections with activities your child can practice at home to assist in developing age appropriate writing skills.
