Homework: June 12th-19th 2024
This is the final homework note of the school year!
Read: Students are to read each evening.
As your child starts the transition into third grade please keep in mind that it is essential that reading continues to be part of their summer routine. Students who don’t read on a regular basis can lose up to 2-8 levels in their decoding abilities while away from school.
Although Trick Word quizzes have come to an end, the following words will be practiced in class: because, before, where, were, their, there, said, who, how, here and very.
Math: Students are asked to complete the double-sided worksheet on interpreting a graph and double-digit computation.
Reminders:
Library books are due back by next Tuesday.
Students need to take a packed lunch to Kings Castle (June 18th). Scooped ice cream will be for sale at the park’s canteen for $2.50. Freezies, popsicles, and mini bags of chips cost $1.00.
Our school-wide Fun Day will be Friday, June 21st. Students will be provided a barbecued hotdog lunch but still must have snacks from home. If your child doesn’t like hot dogs, please ensure they have an alternative lunch.
Mr. Jones will be teaching 2A on Friday, June 21st. I’m traveling to Montreal to attend a family celebration.
Please have a look around your house for any picture books, chapter books, or leveled readers that may belong to 2A/school. Thank you for the ones that have been returned already.
If you’d like an optional June parent-teacher interview, please send me an email to arrange a time to chat.
Learning reports will be issued on the last day of school, June 26th.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Callaghan

Often skip words or insert extra words.
Don’t have time to think about the text they are reading.
Don’t remember story events or key details.
Find it challenging to remember what happened in the previous chapter.
May sounds like they are mumbling when they read aloud.
May ignore punctuation.
Have difficulty recalling factual information.

Homework: March 13th-March 20th
Read: Students are to read each evening.
Picture Books vs Chapter Books: Students are usually ready to transition to chapter books when they’re 7 or 8 years old. It’s normal for some children to be more enthusiastic about diving into these books than others. While some are just keen to flip through a chapter book pretending that it’s been read in its entirety, others are ready for this next stage of reading development.
In order to successfully read these longer, more complex books, students must display a genuine desire, possess focused reading stamina, and have the ability to quickly decode words within the text. If a child spends too much time trying to figure out how to pronounce the words, they won’t comprehend the content.
Although some have been exposed to chapter books at home, we’re just starting to introduce them in class. There’s no rush! If picture books are still the best match for a young reader, that’s absolutely acceptable.
To help prepare your child for this leap, teachers strongly recommend that chapter book reading starts being modeled at home. As parents, instead of exploring picture books, start reading a chapter book to your child at bedtime.
Fundations Trick Words: Up until March Break, students will spend time in class reviewing words from their 103 No Excuses Words assessment. These words include: would, could, should, their, there, I’m, don’t, where, were, who, and before.

They are about the size of a debit card and can be purchased at places like Walmart, Dollarama, and drug stores. Each package contains a different theme such as Barbie, Pokemon, Disney characters, jokes, Angry Birds, Star Wars, etc.
Homework: January 24th- January 31st
Read: Students are to read for approximately 10 minutes each evening.
2A has been talking about how to effectively read nonfiction. This includes learning about the different types of text features, why nonfiction authors use them to organize facts, and how they help the reader understand new information. When your child reads a nonfiction book, it’s essential to talk about its contents.
Ask questions such as:
Do you know anything about ________?
What was the author trying to teach their audience?
What did this part of the book teach you about?
Did the book teach you what you expected to learn? Why or why not?
What are 3 new facts you learned about _______?
Was there any information that the author included that you already knew?
Were there any words that you didn’t know or understand what they mean?
What keywords about the topic did the author use?
Which photograph or illustration was most interesting to you? Why?
What are some text features the author used to organize their nonfiction book?
If you could add another chapter to the Table of Contents what would it be?
Fundations Trick Words: say, says, see, between, each, eight, large, change, city, every, family, night, carry, something
(14 words. The first 5 are review words from Grade One.)
(Students will be tested on these words on Thursday, February 1st.)
Math: Students are asked to complete the double-sided worksheet. The concepts involved are identifying equal to/not equal to and subtraction facts to 12.
When subtracting 1, 2, or 3 from a given number, to find the difference, the most efficient strategy is to count backwards from the larger number. When subtracting 4 or more, it’s best to count forward or to think addition. For example, 9 - 5 = 4 because 5 + 4 = 9.
Reminders:
Library books are due back by next Wednesday..
Students are asked to bring in an empty Pringles can for an upcoming project.
Grade 2 students are going on a field trip to Orwell Corner Historic Village in early March. More information will be sent home in mid-February.
Students do not have school on February 19th. Islander Day.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Callaghan
Homework: January 17th-24th
Read: Students should read each night throughout the week.
After listening to your child read, ask questions like:
Do you understand what that word means? (Children can often decode a word that they don’t know the meaning of.)
What do you think will happen next?
How is the character feeling? How can you tell?
What information do you notice in the pictures that the author doesn’t mention in the words?
Can you tell me what the story was about?
What was the author’s intention in writing the story?
What lesson does the author want the reader to know?

All the best,
Mrs. Callaghan
Homework: January 10th-17th
Read: Students are to read for approximately 10 minutes each evening.
Second graders need to actively think as they read. Stopping several times to ask questions encourages children to look for clues within the book. When reading together, ask questions that spark your child’s curiosity.
Ask questions like:
Do you understand what that word means? (Children can often decode a word that they don’t know the meaning of.)
What do you think will happen next?
How is the character feeling? How can you tell?
What information do you notice in the pictures that the author doesn’t mention in the words?

What lesson does the author want the reader to know?
Fundations Trick Words: say, says, see, between, each, eight, large, change, city, every, family, night, carry, something
(14 words: The first 5 are review words from Grade One.)
*Teachers will be testing students’ recall of these words in 3 weeks at the end of Unit 7.
3. Math: Students are asked to complete the Doubles Subtraction worksheets and to study the following subtraction facts.
The concept of Doubles Subtraction relies on students quickly recalling the addition Doubles facts. For example, if 5 + 5 = 10, then, 10 - 5 = 5.
20 - 10 = 10 10 - 5 = 5
18 - 9 = 9 8 - 4 = 4
16 - 8 = 8 6 - 3 = 3
14 - 7 = 7 4 - 2 = 2
12 - 6 = 6 2 - 1 = 1
Reminders:
Library books are due back tomorrow.
Students need to have an extra pair of socks and gloves/mittens in their school bag.
Happy New Year!

Also, since this is the last homework note before Holiday Break, please continue to have your child explore books throughout their time away from school.
Fundations (Unit 6) Trick Words: only, house, move, right, place, together, some, come, would, could, and should. The last 5 words are review words from Grade 1.
***Since teachers will test students’ recall of these words on Thursday, December 21st, please have your child practice spelling them.
Math Sheet: A review of Doubles/Doubles Plus 1 addition facts.
Each evening children are asked to practice 2-Aparts/Almost Neighbours addition facts:
0+2=2, 1+3=4, 2+4=6, 3+5=8, 4+6=10, 5+7=12, 6+8=14, 7+9=16, 8+10=18, 9+11=20
Reminders:
Library books are due back by next Thursday.
Since my husband and I are traveling over Christmas vacation, Mr. Jones will be teaching 2A from Wednesday, December 20th to Friday, December 22nd. If you need to get in touch with him please either send in a note or call the school.
To celebrate the last day of school before Holiday Break, we’re having a school-wide Pajama Day on Friday, December 22nd.
Students return to school on Monday, January 8, 2024.
A reminder that parents are asked to read 2A’s Google Site (found on the school’s website) once a week. Preferably each Monday.
Happy Holiday!
Mrs. Callaghan
