Colonel Gray Athletics Selection Process
The following sports hold tryouts at the beginning of their seasons:
Volleyball, soccer, field hockey, basketball, badminton, rugby, softball, ball hockey
Cross country, golf, powerlifting, wrestling and track & field do not hold traditional tryouts. For those sports, any eligible Colonel Gray student who commits to the team, attends practices/competitions and meets the team/school expectations has an opportunity to compete for the school. Please note there may not be an opportunity for everyone to participate in zone and provincial meets.
Tryouts or “cuts” are done with regards to safety, playing time and to maximize player and team development. Please keep in mind that we compete in a competitive interscholastic league and are preparing our athletes for high school competition.
Tryouts may last anywhere from 2-5 days before final teams are selected. At times there may be multiple rounds of “cuts” before the final team is selected.
Athletes are expected to attend all tryout dates until final "cuts" are made/posted. The more they attend, the more opportunities the coaches have to see their abilities.
All of our teams have a roster cap, this number depends on the sport
The final team selection will generally be made using a combination of the following criteria (in no particular order)*: Skill & Performance, attitude, willing & able to learn new things, positions & roles needed for the team, effort & hustle, player potential, school grades & behavior
* The CGHS administration, AD, and coaches reserve the right to change or modify the tryout process at any point if they feel it is in the best interest of the team and the program. It is ultimately up to the individual coaches to determine the final team and final number of players based on what they feel is best for the team and the overall program.
The best advice for all student-athletes trying out is to be as prepared as they can, work as hard as they can, have a positive attitude and give their best effort during all of the tryout days to increase their chances of making the team.
All athletes who are selected to participate in Colonel Gray athletics must return a signed specific activities release form as well as a student-athlete contract (linked on main page). Athletic fees will be determined at the beginning of the season and will be communicated to teams.
