“Music enhances the education of our children by helping them to make connections and broadening the depth with which they think and feel. If we are to hope for a society of culturally literate people, music must be a vital part of our children’s education.” – Yo-Yo Ma
Band parents are crucial to the success of this large extracurricular organization. With over a hundred music students, it can be a lot to manage. In order for students to sound their best, they need to be committed members of this large team. Your support of the rules and regulations will make everything run smoother, therefore resulting in great sounding music.

The Colonel Gray Band Christmas Craft Fair
This craft fair has been organized and run by the parents since it's inception in the 1990s. The point of the fair is to create a sense of community, whilst raising funds for students (and their families) for music related travel. The money does not fund the day to day functions of the music department and goes to a credit account for the students who work for the fair.
The music director provides support, music direction, direction for students, but is not responsible for the management of the craft fair. Parents have been vital to running the fair as well as passing on valuable information to the next generation; however, Covid 19 has shut down our organization for 2020 and 2021, thus creating a gap of information being passed on from former parents. Though this could be seen as a negative, it also gives the organization a chance to uphold tradition as well as make necessary changes.
Parent volunteers are essential to keeping this fantastic tradition going strong for years to come. If you're interested in craft fairs, like to build community, and like to have a lot of fun, please consider volunteering for a position. Positions are autonomous but work as a team to ensure a successful and fun fair. All positions are part time from early October until the fair, though the president and registrar will deal with occasional inquires throughout the year.
Facts about the fair:
Students earn an hourly wage based on 90% total sales, minus the total overhead.
A 10% portion is donated back to the music department to help cover the costs of trips for students in financial need, as well as enrichment activities for music students.
The many traditions of the Craft Fair includes 95 vendors with 130 tables of fantastic home made crafts, a tree and wreath sale, the canteen, live music, and our famous homemade fudge.
As many as 5000-6000 paying patrons come to our fair each year.
