In September we started on the "Launching With Story Booklets Mini-Unit:
This mini-unit is designed to get students writing with volume and stamina right away, while giving the opportunity to establish workshop routines and build community in the classroom.
From October to December, we will work on "Crafting True Stories". This unit will teach students how to do narrative writing using ideas from their own lives. Students will be introduced to using a Writer's Notebook to plan ideas and start seed ideas of writing. This unit emphasized the importance of students rehearsing, drafting, revising, and editing their writing. The focus is on teaching the students to work on bringing out the "storyteller's " in their writing. Often writing willdone in a writing booklet.
The students will be using these steps to plan, touch, tell, sketch, jot note small moments and write their true stories. As part of this process, they will be learning to revise their stories by rewriting parts with more details and bringing the characters to life.
This is the checklist that students will be using in class to help edit their writing. Please encourage your child to do a "2 Minute Edit" at the end of their writing. You could choose 1 item for them to look for or all items.
The students used this process to plan, rehearse, draft, revise and edit their stories.
These are the ways that students learned to help write to bring out the storyteller's voice in their writing.
