Weekly Updates
Monday June 21, 2021
Hello Families,
First day of summer and now only 5 days to go to this school year. We're maintaining a pretty regular routine in our morning and afternoon, and then enjoying the end of the school day typically outside. For these last days, we're doing review of previously taught concept and hopefully explore some fun new things too!
As for celebrations, we will be having a Pizza & Garlic Fingers lunch on Friday. If your child already orders pizza, they are welcome to have a slice of garlic fingers. The order will be delivered for lunch (at 12:15) therefore please still send something for morning snack and additional munchies if your child is one hungry caterpillar! If you and your child would like to bring in treats, you are welcome to do so for the rest of this week and next Monday. I'll manage passing what is brought in, though some things might just be saved for the next day. However, whatever is brought needs to be pre-packaged and labeled nut-free. This Thursday is also our scheduled Carnival Day. We will be participating in the fun games and centers with our cohort thanks to the contributions of Home and School. It is foreseen to all take place outside. As the kids will be outside for over an hour as our time slots back onto our recess time, please ensure to pack sunscreen, a water bottle and a hat that day!
Have a wonderful evening,
Mlle Stef Barcic
Important Upcoming Dates:
June 24th - Glen Stewart Carnival Day
June 25th - Wear blue for la lettre B et la couleur bleu
Class Pizza Party and Free Milk Day
Report Cards go home

Hello Families,
Time is flying and we're staying busy! We are wrapping up our measurement unit and ending the year looking at shapes, forms, and patterns. In science, we've been looking into living and non-living things and comparing the difference between needs and wants.
When it comes to our Alphabet Countdown, tomorrow (Monday, June 7th) is P day and yet another day to wear pajamas to school. The letter L falls on Friday, and students will be welcome to bring their sunglasses (les lunettes de soleil) to school.
Finally, the last homework schedule will be coming home tomorrow too!
Happy sunny Sunday to you all!
Mlle Stef Barcic

Monday May 31, 2021
Hello Families,
We're progressing through our alphabet count-down. Today was U for Unique. To spark our thinking and conversation, we read the story, "Tous différents" which highlighted the importance of celebrating how we are all unique and our differences need to be celebrated. It was also the link I used to reference why we were wearing orange today. I will be wearing orange all week, if students would like to join me, they are welcome to do so.
Please note in the Important Upcoming Dates that the letter P falls on June 7th, and to celebrate this letter, we will be having a Pajama Day!!
Furthermore, I would like to share that the class has been working really hard in obtaining our 100 pompoms. We've implemented this system three weeks ago to really encourage the class to speak in French and to refine our self-regulation as a group over this last stretch at school. We're only 16 pompoms away from achieving our goal, in which the class will be able to decide how they would like to celebrate. We'll be brainstorming ideas and getting them approved by administration, then voting once we've hit that 100 mark. Information will be coming home at that time.
For math, we are continuing in exploring the concept of measurement. Making connections of using forms of measurement in our daily lives would be beneficial.
The time is passing so quick and we're working hard every day!
Have a wonderful first week of June!
Mlle Stef Barcic
Important Upcoming Dates:
June 7th - Pajama Day
*Also, please do not forget to complete the COVID-Student Screening Questionnaire each morning. Thank you!

Hello Families,
We're now at the homestretch of Grade 1! To help us get there, we're doing an Alphabet Count-down each day. Last Friday we started with the letter Z!
In Math, we will now begin exploring measurement, while in our Science/Social Studies unit we are looking into the qualities and needs of living and non-living things.
Wishing you all a wonderful 4 day week,
Mlle Stef Barcic
*Also, please do not forget to complete the COVID-Student Screening Questionnaire each morning. Thank you!
Monday May 17, 2021
Hello Families,
We are continuing with our informative texts and will begin writing about our favourite animals this week. In math, we are learning about how to describe equality as a balance and inequality as an imbalance. To do so, we've been working with Canadian coin and other math manipulatives. Referencing and using change at home would be a great way to support your child in making more connections and giving them extra practice in counting, adding, subtracting, and finding equalities.
Lastly, this Wednesday, students who take the bus will also be practising bus evacuations right before dismissal.
Have a wonderful week ahead,
Mlle Stefanie Barcic
Important Upcoming Dates:
May 24 - Victoria Day (no classes)
*Also, please do not forget to complete the COVID-Student Screening Questionnaire each morning. Thank you!
Monday May 10, 2021
Hello Families,
I hope all of our mothers had a beautiful day celebrating Mother's Day yesterday! The class was excited to bring home their plants and to gift their beautiful pots to their mommas'!
Few updates for us this week. The only request that I have is for students to do some additional research into their favourite animal at home. We will be writing informative texts on a specific animal and extra research, inquiry and discussion at home will support your child in their writing process.
Wishing you all a great week ahead!
Important Upcoming Dates:
May 24 - Victoria Day (no classes)
*Also, please do not forget to complete the COVID-Student Screening Questionnaire each morning. Thank you!
Monday Additions to the Weekly Update:
Monday May 3, 2021
Hello Families,
The monthly homework challenge for May was sent home today. Digital copies are also available under the Homework tab on this site. The words included on the two lists for this month are words that have been our 'Words of the Week' the past two weeks and some have been on previous lists. Therefore, your child should have some context when practising them at home with you. Progressing to proper spelling is a great next step for students who have already mastered reading these words.
Furthermore, more math flash-cards were sent home. I recommend practising the new cards, first by themselves and then to add them to your child's growing bag of Math Facts.
Lastly, Spring School Pictures caught us by surprise! They are rescheduled for this Thursday, May 6th. I've added this date under Important Upcoming Dates on yesterday's post. I'll make the point to remind students in class too!
Happy Monday!
S.Barcic

Hello 1F Families,
It’s the beginning of May and I have to say that those April Showers did bring May flowers! Being out and about this weekend, I’ve spotted a lot of blooming buds, did you? Or maybe you found other interesting signs of spring out in nature, like the fallen wasps nest that I found last weekend! We have also planted peas in the class, special for Earth Day on April 22nd. The students have been very invested in the plants’ growth and they will be very surprised to see the changes since Friday. (Pictures of the changes are to follow this week!)
I would also like to thank everyone for their engagement in Thursday’s Superhero Day! We had a great day dressed up in our superhero gear!
Just a reminder that this week is a short week, with no school on Friday. In addition, I’ve also included the link to contribute to school supplies for next year if you would like your child’s future Grade 2 teacher to purchase the necessary supplies over the summer.

Hello Students and Families of 1F at Glen Stewart,
I am very excited to now be teaching at Glen Stewart! Prior to Sunday Night's Public Health announcement, I have been in the classroom and in contact with Mme Gloria and Mme Tasha getting ready to meet all the kiddos this week! I was really looking forward to getting to know the class over my first week and then meet parents on Thursday evening and Friday. However, we are adapting, and though my time with the kids has been modified for this week, parent-teacher conferences will still be taking place over the phone or through Google Meets on Thursday and Friday. I kindly ask that you log back into the School Appointment Online website [https://gsp.parentteacherconferences.net/admin/] and update your preferred type of contact for your scheduled interview time. If anyone who has not scheduled an interview time but would like to meet, you are still able to book a time through the site, or you can email me at sabarcic@edu.pe.ca and we can coordinate a time to chat.
Likewise, this weekend I prepared the monthly homework though I was unsure of the most current word list students were working on. I was hoping to flip through their homework duotangs on Monday and share the assignment after school but evidently, that could not happen. Therefore, I decided to stick to what I have planned and just roll with it. If your child has already been working on the Rose and Violette lists at home, I encourage you to use this short academic month as a time to go back and review words from all of the word lists students have worked on thus far this year! Similarly, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. The monthly homework will always be posted under the Homework Tab within this Google Site.
I am greatly looking forward to getting to know and work with all of the students and the family members that make up the 1F community!
Wishing you all a kind Tuesday,
Mlle Stefanie Barcic
I am from Ontario and moved to P.E.I at the end of August. For the last six months, I have been teaching Grade 4 French Immersion in Cornwall. I am very excited to be able to learn, grow and share with the students of 1F for the last term of their Grade 1 year!
When I am not at school, I love to spend time outdoors on trails and in a garden. I am also an adventurous cook and eater!
