Show and Share Assemblies

We have the following show and share assemblies coming up this term and in Summer Term (see key dates above)

  • They all begin at 9am in the main hall

  • Parents and carers are all invited and must arrive via the Rose Garden

  • Please note that once the assembly has started we may not be able to admit late parent/carers.

If your child/ren's class isn't listed above their assembly will be in summer term 2 & dates to follow.

Messaging and chat apps are a great way for a child to stay in touch with their friends and family but it’s important both of you are comfortable with who they’re talking to.

Talk to your child about who they’re chatting to and how they know them. Remind them to be conscious of who they’re sharing personal information with and not to share information with people they haven’t met before. This includes information like their name, location, email, phone number and school name.

Dear Parents/ Carers,

A huge thank you to all our of community for your incredible donations and generosity for the people of Ukraine and thank you to those parents and carers who helped to transport the donations, this was greatly appreciated.

Assemblies this week have focused on International Women’s Day (8th March). This links in with Article 2 (non-discrimination), Article 12 (respect for children’s views) and Article 13 (sharing thoughts freely). This year’s theme is ‘break the bias’, where the children learnt the action (as top image on the right).

In both assemblies, we discussed which jobs were ‘women’s jobs’ and which jobs were ‘men’s jobs’. As the children are constantly taught about their rights and equality of opportunity, it was fantastic that the majority of children indicated that any of the jobs we looked at (nurse, surgeon, construction manager, beautician, chef, lorry driver, scientist) could be done by either men or women. This is thankfully in stark contrast to many young people’s views, as shown in the video >>>>>>

In the upper school assembly, we looked at the gender pay gap and also discussed what a gender equal world would look like. This brought about much discussion around the playing of football at break times and also a question as to why we have separate boys’ and girls’ races at our sports' days. Both of these issues will be passed on to the Rights’ Respecting Steering Group to discuss.

The invasion of Ukraine is a deeply disturbing development. The UK Trauma Council, founded by the Anna Freud Centre, includes general information about the impact of trauma.

They have also had specific requests for advice on how to best respond to our children’s natural curiosity and growing anxiety around the conflict in Ukraine. In response they have developed some useful suggestions with BBC Bitesize for parents and carers. The NHS have also shared some helpful advice you can find here.

Take care,

Fiona Duffy

Science Week - Parent/Carer Volunteers Needed

From Monday 28th March - Friday 1st April, we will be celebrating Science Week at Dundonald!

As part of this, classes will be exploring the questions 'What is Science?' and 'What is a Scientist?'. To help with this, we are looking for some parents/carers/family members to visit classes (either virtually or in person) during the week to talk about how they use Science in their jobs. This could be anything from carrying out scientific research to being a vet or a fitness coach - we would like the children to understand the everyday value of Science and that Science is for EVERYONE! If you would like to be involved, please let me know via email/note to the office and Miss Hall will get back to you.

RED NOSE DAY - MARCH 18TH 2022

Why couldn't the pony sing at karaoke? - It was a little horse...

The School Council have created this poster of ideas on how we can celebrate and support this year's Red Nose Day on March 18th!

  • Children are encouraged to wear red. This could be a red accessory (e.g. hairband, hat etc) or an entirely red outfit. Children are also able to come in with a 'wacky hairstyle' - The more creative the better! I have attached some images for your information but this can include hair spray or could simply be coming in with a different hairstyle to usual.

On the day, children will be asked to donate £2 which will be sent to comic relief and collected by their class teachers at morning registration.

  • Children are encouraged to bring in to school a joke (or multiple) that they will share with the class.

We can't wait to hear all the jokes and share the photographs and memories from the day with you all!

You can visit the Comic Relief Website here.

CHANGES TO THE TEACHING OF PHONICS AND READING

RECEPTION - YEAR 2

At Dundonald we are dedicated to the effective teaching of early reading and phonics. They have a high priority within the school and as a result we are continually reflecting on current practice and striving for improvement. As a school, we have reviewed our teaching of reading and phonics in line with the Department for Education's revised core criteria for effective systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) teaching programmes and new process of validated complete systematic synthetic phonics teaching programmes.

We are very excited to share with you a new venture that we are embarking upon as a school. We have invested in a newly released phonics and reading programme called ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’. This is a comprehensive reading and phonics programme that has been built around the DFE’s update, as well as drawing on the latest research into how children learn best, how to ensure learning stays in children’s long term memory and how best to enable children to apply their learning to become highly competent readers. This term, we have begun the transition over to this new scheme, which we hope will be fully embedded by September 2022.

The use of ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ impacts the way that both phonics and reading are taught, particularly in Reception and Year 1 classes. Some children in our current Year 2 classes who, through the pandemic, missed out on many aspects of phonics teaching, are also benefiting from following this new scheme.

Children in Reception and Year 1 continue to have daily phonics lessons following the programme progression and overview and alongside these lessons, each child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will take part in three reading practice sessions. We have invested in sets of 120 new early reading books which are fully decodable and entirely match to the phonics scheme. Children will be reading in small groups and will read the same book three times with specially trained adults in school. Each reading session has a specific focus:

  • Decoding - use of phonics skills

  • Prosody - reading with rhythm, stress and intonation

  • Comprehension - demonstrating understanding of the text

Over the rest of the Spring and Summer terms, as we are in a time of transition, we will continue to send home ‘old style’ phonetically decodable Guided Reading books for you to share with your child. In the future, we hope to give all families access to ‘e-books’ that will match those that your child is reading in class.

In the near future we will be providing a recorded parent/carer workshop that will give more detail on the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ programme and how it is being implemented in our school. In the meantime you may wish to access useful information on the parent/carer section of their website.

Reading and Phonics Leaders

YEAR 1 LIBRARY VISIT

On Monday, the children in Year 1 had so much fun visiting Wimbledon Library. The children were really sensible and respectful inside the library, remembering to use quiet voices and put books back where they belong once they'd finished reading.

We found out about what people use the library for as well as getting a chance to scan and borrow a couple of books each!

(Don't forget to return these yourselves to Wimbledon Library - you are allowed to keep these for up to 3 weeks)

"I liked using the machine (to scan a book)" - Haroon 1VC

"We saw lots of people on our way to the library" - Robbie 1VC

Thank you again to all the parent/carer helpers - we couldn't have gone without you!
