ABOUT ME: Hi! My name is April Griffin Bracamontes. I am a full time faculty at Cerritos College. I have been at Cerritos College for 11 years as an instructor. I am a community college graduate and I think community college is the best and most awesome way to begin your higher education journey. I love swimming, most things Disney, frozen yogurt, watching trash television (as evidenced above by my photo with Lisa Vanderpump pre-pandemic of course), hiking, traveling/exploring new places, and of course teaching Communication Studies!
This is my dog BOO! You are welcome to call her Boo, Boobers, Boogaloo. She loves all those names
You are welcome to address me as April, Professor/Mrs. B, or Professor/Mrs. Bracamontes. I love all of those names
Pronouns: she/her/hers
Email: abracamontes@cerritos.edu
Textbook: Communication in the Real World
Student Hours: Tuesday 2:30-4pm and Thursday 8:30am-9:00am (second floor of the Social Science Building in the Communication Studies/ESL suite) and via ZOOM
My goal is to ensure that you are successful in my class. I understand that life happens and things get turned in late. I understand that the way I explain something online might not click with you. I understand that we might do our online work at the same time of the day. I understand that you may need support to succeed. And I want to do all I can (within reason) to make sure you are able to complete this class with the grade you want. But that means you need to advocate for yourself too! I am not a mind reader (although how cool would that be) so if you need something you need to let me know. If something doesn't make sense, let me know. If you need to turn something in late, let me know. I may not respond instantaneously but I will get back to you! And we will find a way to ensure you succeed.
Student hours are a time for you to come ask questions, get clarification, say hello, or talk about our class. Please come and visit. All our student hours are in person.
If you are unable to meet during the posted student hours we can find an alternative time to meet either on ZOOM or in person.
Most work can be turned in up until the last day of the semester. There are some caveats to this general statement. Please make sure you familiarize yourself with these caveats. This is important for your success.
Exams/Quizzes are only open for a few weeks at a time and you will have to complete the exam/quiz in that time.
Oral presentations are due on presentations days. There will be ONE presentation make up day during finals week. You are able to make up oral presentations at that time. Please remember trying to fit all your presentations on the last day probably won't work. I encourage you to really use the presentation make up date for if you are truly ill or you would like to try to earn a higher grade on a presentation.
I encourage you to try to keep up with the work as best you can. Waiting to the end of the semester to turn everything in doesn't do you or me any favors. That is where the "I don't accept no work" comes in. If you ghost our class (don't do anything for three or more weeks at a time) I will email you to check in. That email will let you know that you need to check in with me by a certain date or risk being dropped from the class.
It's available online. And it's free! Make your best effort to keep up with the reading. It will compliment what you are learning in class. And please note, sometimes items from our quizzes/exams come straight from our text.
I have adopted a modified grading scale for all of my classes. I believe this benefits you. Our grading breakdown will be as follows
4=A (100-80%)
3=B (79.9-60%)
2=C (59.9-40%)
1=D (39.9% and below)
0=F-you will earn an F or an FW if you stop participating in the course past the drop date.
