The WNBA

Origin of the WNBA

The WNBA, or Women's National Basketball Association, founded by the NBA began in 1996 as a professional league for women's athletes. The league began it's first season on June 21, 1997. The league was made up of eight teams - the Houston Comets, New York Liberty, Pheonix Mercury, Sacramento Monarchs, Charlotte Sting, Cleveland Rockers, Los Angeles Sparks, and Utah Starzz. The WNBA has contributed to the growth and development of women's basketball worldwide by providing a platform for top athletes to shine and inspiring young girls to pursue their basketball dreams.

Comparison of WNBA and NBA

Both the WNBA and NBA are unique in their successes. Originating in 1949, the NBA is a much older league than the WNBA. Therefore, it not accurate to compare the two leagues currently. The NBA is evidently more popular than the WNBA at this point in time and the WNBA has had some struggles of it's own. However, when comparing the popularity of the NBA when it was just as old as the WNBA now, the WNBA is more popular and more successful. (Agha and Berri) The WNBA has had some struggles in terms of media coverage, sponsorship oppurunities, and overall viewership compared to the NBA. There has been a large discrepancy on the resources and financial support avaliable to the two leagues. However, it is of great importance to recognize how much tremendous progress the WNBA has made over the years. There has been an increase in attendance, TV viewership, and fan engagement. The WNBA has played a vital role in promoting gender equality in sports and empowering female athletes. There has even been a growing support from popular NBA athletes towards the WNBA. The late Kobe Bryant expressed his support for the WNBA regularly by attending games with his daughter Gianna and voicing his encouraging thoughts about women's basketball. He even told ESPN that he could see women's players playing in the same league as men in the future.(“How Kobe Bryant championed growth of women's basketball through Mamba Cup and more”)

Steph vs Sabrina Three-Point Contest

On Saturday February 17, 2024, for the first time ever, the best shooters in the world from the NBA and WNBA went head-to-head in a three-point competition. Sabrina Ionescu from the New York Liberty took on Stephen Curry from the Golden State Warriors after her record breaking performance at the WNBA all-star week last year. After Ionescu set the scoring record of 37 points for both leagues in the 2023 WNBA three-point competition, it was only right to crown the ultimate three-point champion. Many viewers were curious to see how Sabrina would adapt to the NBA three-point line which is one foot and 7.25 inches further than the WNBA one. Curry ended with 29 and Ionescu ended with 26.  Even though Sabrina ended up losing by only three-points, the competition was a great promotion of women athletes and strengthened the increasing numbers of WNBA views and income. This competition shined a new light on the WNBA. (McDaniel)
