The Culture of

Women's Basketball

Women's basketball is an incredible sport that deserves more recognition and appreciation. It is important to acknowledge the recent progress and achievements of women's basketball in order to continue to support it's growth at all levels!

Background

It all began when physical education instructor, Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891. Women began to play the sport but used modified rules during the early years. In order to make the game of basketball more "ladylike", women would play with a court that was divided into three zones, and players were required to stay in their assigned zone. Dribbling was also restricted, which made players have to pass the ball instead. The first women's basketball game was played between two college teams, Stanford and UC Berkeley in 1892.  The sport took off after the passage of Title IX in 1972, which banned sex discrimination in education, creating more opportunities for women athletes.  After this law was passed, women's basketball programs in colleges and universities were established and the sport started to gain more recognition. In 1996, the WNBA was created which enabled women athlete's to showcase their talent and skills at the highest level. The sport has had some incredible talent including top players like Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, and Sue Bird.
