Pair up with a classmate. You'll each need to follow the instructions to create the Battleship game board. Then you can take turns playing the game! For a longer description of the instructions, check the video at the end of this page.
Create a new, blank spreadsheet
Title your spreadsheet
Create the gameboard
Select all the cells in a 10 x 10 grid (A1:J10)
Select the border icon
Select the outline marker
You can also change the line thickness here
While the grid is selected, change the background color to blue
You will mark your opponent’s incorrect guesses with an “X”, so you’ll want to make the text visible
Type an “X” in a cell of the grid
Format the X a bright color, change the font size to 36, and center it in the cell
Use the Paint Format tool to copy the formatting to all the cells of the grid
(Note: Paint Format looks like a roller brush. To use it, select the cell you want to copy, then click the Paint Format tool, then select the cell(s) you want to copy the format to. Super useful!)
Now delete the original X. The cell will remember the formatting.
Mark 5 ships by changing the background of the cells to red on your game board
Ships should have be 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 adjacent spaces
Select all cells of a ship (control or command key)
Under the Format menu, choose Conditional formatting
Choose to format cells if: “Text is exactly” and “X”
Change the color under Formatting style to red
Now, if you enter an X in one of the ship cells, the cell turns red
Change the background color of your ships' cells to the background color of the grid to hide them
To the right of the grid, label each of your ships with its size
You can choose any appropriate name for each ship
Press the Share button, and share with your partner
Make sure to change the permissions to Viewer, rather than editor
That means your partner can see, but not change, your spreadsheet
Press the Share button, and share with your partner
Make sure to change the permissions to Viewer, rather than editor
That means your partner can see, but not change, your spreadsheet
Take turns making guesses by calling out cell addresses
Mark each address your opponent calls with an X on the grid
If the guess is a hit, the color changes
When all spaces of a ship are hit, you must tell your opponent
They’ve sunk that ship, and shade the name of the ship red
When one player sink all their opponent’s ships, they win!
