2024 Finals Judges
Betty Francisco is a business executive, impact investor and community leader. She is known as a powerful convener and changemaker, unapologetic about creating visibility for Latino and POC leaders. Boston Magazine named her as one of the 150 Most Influential Bostonians in 2024, and the Boston Business Journal named Betty as one of the Power 50 – Movement Makers in 2022. Betty is currently the CEO of Boston Impact Initiative, an impact investment fund that invests to close the racial wealth divide in Massachusetts. She is the co-founder of Amplify Latinx, a social venture that is building Latinx economic and political power through Latino leadership representation and economic opportunity in Massachusetts. She serves on the Boards of Directors of The Boston Foundation, Nellie Mae Education Foundation, Beth Israel Lahey Health, and Roxbury Community College; she is also a member of MA Governor Maura Healy's Latino Empowerment Advisory Council. Betty obtained her J.D. and M.B.A. from Northeastern University and her B.A. in History from Bard College.
An investor and advisor for companies at the intersection of technology and climate impact, David Miller brings over thirty years of technology startup management experience and over twenty-five years of early stage investing experience to Clean Energy Ventures as a founding partner. Previously, David was the founder and Executive Managing Director of the Clean Energy Venture Group. Prior to that, he was a Director in the New Ventures Group at Lucent Technologies, and founder and CEO of Quantum Telecom Solutions. David has been on the board of directors of several clean energy companies, including CEV portfolio companies Boston Materials, Pearl Certification, Volexion, Noon Energy, prior portfolio companies Pika Energy, and MyEnergy, and has advised and mentored many others. He is an Advisory Board Member of the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative, where he also has an appointment as Research Affiliate, and previously taught in the electrical engineering department at Rutgers University. He completed his doctorate at MIT where he developed the model underpinning the CleanStart clean energy startup simulator,and runs workshops utilizing CleanStart as well as the En-ROADS climate change solutions simulator. He developed the methodology behind CEV’s Simple Emissions Reduction Calculator (SERC) in order to most quickly and effectively screen which startup companies have the most potential to reduce GHG emissions at scale and supports industry efforts to standardize emission reduction assessments.
Kristin has a Master’s Degree in Plastics Engineering and over 25 years of experience in plastics, packaging, bioplastics and recycling. She has held technical and business development roles at ExxonMobil, Sabic, Huntsman Corporation and bioplastics company Metabolix. Prior to joining Closed Loop Partners in 2022, Kristin was Founder and CEO of Radical Plastics, a Boston-based company that was the Cleantech Open National Grand Prize Winner for the 2018 cohort. As Senior Advisor and Venture Partner at Closed Loop Partners, Kristin is responsible for deal flow across both ventures and catalytic capital strategies.
Susan Stewart is the Interim Managing Director of Investments for MassCEC’s 2030 Fund. The fund invests in promising climate-tech companies as they de-risk their technology, reach early commercial milestones, and attract growth funding. Before MassCEC, she was active in building multiple start-ups including roles as CFO of an Energy Storage and Management company and VP of Finance at Blockchain Identity Management company. Before pivoting to start-ups, Susan held financial and operational roles at Draper Labs and IBM. Susan has an MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business and a BA from Wellesley College.
Swapnil Shah is a Partner at Energy Impact Partners (EIP) focusing on Portfolio Value Creation.
As a seasoned operating executive, passionate about launching and scaling new ventures, Swap has founded three enterprise software companies, evaluates and advises companies as a PE/VC operating advisor, and is dedicated to working on climate technologies and the energy transition.
Most recently Swap was the founder and CEO of FirstFuel Software, an industry leader in customer intelligence for utilities, delivering solutions to 40 of the world’s largest electric and gas utilities. FirstFuel was acquired in a private equity led rollup to form Uplight. Prior to FirstFuel, Swap founded and led two data center automation software companies that were acquired by Oracle and Inktomi. Swap served as a growth advisor and board member of Resource Innovations (acquired by Morgan Stanley Capital) and currently serves on the boards of GridX, Urbint, Innowatts and the Northeast Clean Energy Council.
