Volunteers

Volunteer and Mentor Recognition

Announced on Friday 10/22!

Over 1,000 volunteers assist Cleantech Open and the entrepreneurs every year, one of the most rewarding and gratifying aspects of Cleantech Open's non-profit mission.

Mentors are experienced businesspeople or technical / functional specialists that work with the entrepreneurs, either on an on-going basis or ad-hoc or as a "mock judge" or as a business clinic coach.

Volunteers help execute the program by leading various functions, like marketing or mentor leadership or event management or partner outreach.

The following Volunteers and Mentors were recognized for doing a great job and/or going above and beyond expectations:

Volunteers: “Bettina Grab joined CTO in 2020 as National Marketing Chair - never having met any of us in person - she was our first pandemic “hire” (she’s a volunteer!) Still, she jumped in with both feet and upgraded our National Newsletters and handled social media. All while starting and building her own business. She partnered up with Melanie Adamson, founder of Alder & Co a cleantech marketing agency - and they initiated a project to guide CTO through a branding exercise - including leading a project with PGS - Presidio Graduate School's sharp grad students. It’s been a pleasure to work with both Bettina and Mel, and we value and appreciate their contributions!

"Jim Diestel has been a tremendous contributor to Cleantech Open over the years, and 2021 was no different. When a team was struggling this year, he graciously stepped in midway through the curriculum to help, and he did so to rave reviews from everyone he worked with. We truly appreciate Jim's flexibility, availability, and longstanding contributions to CTO."

Ross Malme has been an active volunteer and mentor for over ten years. As a mentor, he has always gone above and beyond to ensure his startups have the education and contacts to be successful. As a result, he has sent multiple semifinalists from the Southeast to the Global Forum to compete including the 2014 National Grand Prize winner (this year, Luftcar).”

Mentor: “As a Sophomore Mentor (second year), Linda Fowells represents the determination and support we love to see in a mentor. After a challenging first-year as a new mentor to CTO, not least because the pandemic eliminated opportunities for face-to-face interactions plus fellowship among mentors, Linda had a very successful season this year, earning high praise from her mentee and really getting into the groove of supporting CTO entrepreneurs.”

Volunteer & Mentor: "We appreciate and recognize Frank Bryan for his outstanding work this year. He went above and beyond to volunteer his time throughout the program, and for that, we thank him!"
