$30 billion will be invested in seawater desalination over the next 5 years. The dominant technology in desalination today is Reverse Osmosis (RO). While RO is trusted and proven, it is also energy intensive. Our technology, batch RO, is the most energy-efficient RO process and can make seawater desalination more affordable and sustainable. Our beachhead market is household water purifiers in India, where we are able to reduce the waste produced by these systems by 66%.

Millions of years ago, the "smasher" mantis shrimp, one of nature's feistiest predators, evolved to develop an internal structure to protect its hammer-like club it uses to pulverize prey with incredible speed and force. This unique structure that forms the mantis shrimp's club protects it from self-inflicting damage as it crushes hard-shelled prey. The University of California Riverside (UCR) has spent over 14 years and over $10 million dollars reverse engineering the club and has determined that it is not the material, but the structure that provides the strength and toughness. The material is organized in sheets of locally parallel fibers that are stacked upon each other such that each sheet is skewed by an angle from the sheet below it. This unique architecture is called a helicoid and has now been broadly patented by UCR and licensed to Helicoid Industries Inc. to commercialize its use in composite materials.

Most crop/forest residues (biomass) are difficult to utilize, because it is logistically expensive to collect and transport loose, wet, and bulky biomass over long distances to a centralized facility. Imagine small-scale, low-cost, portable equipment latched onto the back of tractors and pick-up trucks to deploy to hard-to-access areas to locally convert residues into useful products before transportation. We reduce logistical cost by up to 70% and increase the amount of biomass utilization.
