Charles R. Drew High School opened in the Fall of the 2009 school year. This Clayton County School is named after Dr. Charles R. Drew, an American surgeon and medical researcher. He researched in the field of blood transfusions, developing improved techniques for blood storage, and applied his expert knowledge to developing large-scale blood banks.
During the school inaugural year, CDHS housed students in grades 9 and 10 from 5 surrounding high schools in order to alleviate overcrowding at those facilities in portions of Jonesboro, Rex, Riverdale and College Park.
In 2012, Charles R. Drew High School added its first senior class to the student body. In 2013, Charles R. Drew High School graduated its first true graduation class. Serving more than 1,555 students in grades 9-12, the academy structure, smaller learning communities and a focus on career paths is the signature feature of Charles R. Drew High School.
The Medical Science Magnet program gives students interested in medical science careers and early pathway to learning about the field.
We are proud of our learning communities where students and faculty create stronger relationships, more mentoring occurs, and academics excel.
The Career Technology labs are places where hands-on, project based learning is taking place. Students who are not inspired by the traditional classroom often shine in these environments.
Project based learning is how the working world works, working in teams on assignments and then presenting your work to a group. Each lab has several working areas, which challenges the students and develops cognitive skills, social skills, and academic skills all of which contribute to a culture of lifelong learning.
Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year at Charles R. Drew High School! We are excited to have everyone back in the building and look forward to a great and productive year. Here are some reminders and information:
Classes begin at 8:20am and end at 3:20pm
Student drop off is in the main parking lot in front of the building. The stadium parking lot is for student parking and buses only. Please do no drop students off in the stadium parking lot.
Students may only bring clear backpacks to school. This is county board policy.
Students need to know their 4-digit bus route number, not the bus number. Bus numbers may change if there is a substitute bus but the route number will remain the same.
Please make sure that your student brings a charged Chromebook to school each day.
Please communicate with your student's teacher(s) about questions or problems
