Students in Mrs. Hupp's Math Modeling and Reasoning class designed and built catapults out of rubber bands and popsicle sticks. Catapults were tested and adjusted to ensure they could fire mini marshmallows that would consistently land on the same spot. Afterwards, students took measurements, and used the distance and time of the marshmallow's flight to create a mathematical model to represent the path of the marshmallows. Students were instructed to place their catapult on a desk, adjust their models to accommodate the change in height, then use the model to predict where a target should be placed on the floor so that the catapult would be able to hit its mark. The project was a great success!
Pi Day is coming up soon! The math department will be celebrating! More coming up next month!

Dennison Rotary Parade of Flags:
Six Claymont High School Juniors and Seniors assisted the Rotary Club with displaying flags for Labor Day, Patriots Day, & Veterans Day so far this school year. The Rotary Club members and the high school students will place and remove the flags in each participant’s yard before and after each holiday.
Presidential Election 2024:
Mr. Scott Buxton’s Government Classes conducted a mock election leading up to the Presidential Election that took place on Tuesday November 5, 2024. Students researched the candidate races and ballot issues. Some of the things they researched included tax levy renewals, U.S. Senator races, and County Commissioner races. This allowed students to see how important it is to be informed before going to the polling booths!
The History department will be busy in the next couple of months with a few other events:
The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary Americanism and Government Test: The American Legion Americanism test is a scholarship exam that assesses a student's knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, flag etiquette, and local, state, and federal governments. The test can be given to any 10th, 11th, & 12th grade student. Students answer 50 questions and express their thoughts in an essay on a topic in 300 words or less. The overall winner will advance to the district level.
Buckeye Boys & Girls State: June 2025
The application process is underway right now. Buckeye Boys State will take place June 8-15th at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Buckeye Girls State will take place June 8-14th at Bowling Green State University.
Winter Law Day Courtroom Observation Experience: March 6, 2025
Eighteen Claymont Junior Students in American Government will be participating in this program sponsored by the Tuscarawas County Bar Association and the EOESC. Students will be briefed on the court and criminal process then provided with the opportunity to witness and observe felony sentencing hearing. Upon the conclusion of the hearing, court officials will take questions in regards to the hearings and students general questions about the law and all involved in our county court system. This event will take place at the Tuscarawas Court House on March 6.
Tour of the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center: May 22, 2025
Forty select juniors will travel to Columbus, Ohio on May 22nd and receive a guided tour of the state capital highlighting the inner workings of the Ohio Supreme Court, Ohio judicial system, and the role of the law. Mr. Scott Buxton received a grant to help offset the cost of this trip.
CHS juniors Zak Cox, Jacob Hedtke, and Aron Brindley traveled to Claymont Middle School in late December to help with filming an exciting event where middle school students Tyson Smitley and Eleanor Hamilton had the unique opportunity to ask questions to astronauts aboard the International Space Station.
As digital media students, Zak, Jacob, and Aron showcased their strong work ethic, quick work, and dedication, adhering to the quality guidelines provided by NASA, including ensuring proper lighting, sound, and set design.
Beyond their technical skills, these three students served as excellent role models for the younger participants. Through their active involvement in A/V Productions and the CHS Yearbook, they demonstrate the importance of teamwork, leadership, and professionalism.
Zak, Jacob, and Aron not only contributed their expertise but also took the time to engage with their middle school peers, inspiring them to pursue their own interests in media production and space exploration. The event provided a unique opportunity for the high school students to mentor through being a good example for their younger counterparts, fostering a sense of pride, cooperation and respect across grade levels and their local community.

The Claymont Academic Challenge Team was in action playing the “Winter Classic” Round Robin tournament on Saturday January 25. We lost a close game to Hiland, losing by 3 questions, but then came back to soundly defeat both Buckeye Trail and Conotton Valley. Your Mustangs were 5-2 in IVC Play which was good enough for 3rd place in the IVC Tourney held on Saturday February 1.
On February 1, tourney action started against Strasburg, where we won 40-16. This set up a rematch against #2 seeded Hiland. We were tied with them leading up to the final round, where they pulled away. To our surprise, the #5 seed TCC upset #4 Conotton Valley, and played us in round 3. Your Mustangs were in the lead till the final few questions, where TCC Pulled away. Hiland would go on to win the IVC championship, and TCC was the IVC Runner up. We had a very strong team this year comprised of: Seniors Owen Cox, Kaden Salyers. Juniors: Cora Dotts, Cambria Edwards, Aeris Sigler, Sophomores: Heston Cranmer, Jasmine Davidson, and Freshman Logan Cox. Your mustangs will regroup and come back strong next year.
