Great question! There are a wide range of answers to that question. Our primary emphasis is to develop a child who questions, wonders and grows into an adult who has analytical and critical thinking skills that can be used throughout their journey through life. As far as this community though, we use Claritas as our spine and encourage families to memorize material at home. We aren’t concerned about how much you memorize (we don’t test or ask or check in) but about how those facts inform your understanding of the world around you and how you can use that information to springboard into the study of your choosing. How you chose to use the memorization piece is up to you and how it fits in with your homeschool.

Western culture and civilization has deep roots in Latin and we are better equipped to study this history with Latin background. English has strong ties to Latin so we benefit in grammatical studies as well as literary studies. There are other reasons but we find it very valuable. Yes, Latin is required for K-6th grades.
