As a master's student at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln I had the opportunity to focus my studies on Literacy, Language and Culture through the Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education program within the College of Education and Human Sciences. Coming out of that program is the following capstone project. Within the following writing I had the opportunity to focus my research on Students with Limited and/or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) from Guatemala in Crete, NE. This is a broad view of the social problems in Guatemala causing an increase in unaccompanied minors to travel to the United States in recent years, the ramifications of such migration on Crete, the U.S. and Guatemala, as well as a collection of best practices for working with and educating individuals identified as SLIFE in the classroom.
