On December 9, 2023, the Shirettes Dance Team celebrated a monumental milestone—our 50th reunion. The celebration, filled with laughter, memories, and dance, brought together over 80 enthusiastic alumni, past coaches, and current team members for a night to remember. The Shirettes Dance Team program has left a lasting mark on the LSE community, and this celebration was a testament to the enduring spirit of our legacy.
The festivities kicked off with an open house at the Country Club of Lincoln and included a dazzling display of uniforms, photos, and pass-down boxes from different eras. The memorabilia created a visual timeline of the team's evolution. The old photos and traditions sparked conversations as alumnae reminisced about the countless hours spent practicing, the thrill of competitions, and the unbreakable bonds forged through dance.
The two founding members, Sharon Merritt Brushwood (‘74) and Jayne Woytassek Cromer (‘74), told the story that laid the foundation for a legacy that would span five remarkable decades. Brushwood and Cromer reminisced on the challenges that faced as they created one of the first dance teams in Lincoln and how they created the name “Shirettes.” Brushwood wanted to keep with the Scottish tradition that the LSE Knights had and picked the Scottish word “shire” meaning community. Cromer added “rettes” after her love of the Radio City Rockettes. Thus creating the team name “Shirettes.”
Following the open house, all attending alumni were invited to rehearse the “Decades Dance” choreographed by Jamie Tesch ('01) and Jaci Kellison ('02). Past and present Shirettes moved in unison as they seamlessly combined the iconic dance styles that defined each era, from the groovy 70s to the cutting-edge moves of the 2020s. The energy in the room was electric, with each alumni reliving the passion and dedication that defined their time on the team.
The pinnacle of the celebration was the unforgettable halftime performance at the boys varsity basketball game where the Knights took on the Creighton Prep Bluejays. The Shirettes took the court in matching t-shirts with precision and grace. The crowd erupted in cheers as the dance team seamlessly blended tradition with modern flair, showcasing the enduring legacy of the Shirettes. Following the decades dance, all alumni joined in synchronization with the Pep Band to perform LSE’s original school song - Fite!
As the alumnae danced their hearts out, it was evident that the essence of the Shirettes transcends time. The performance was not just a celebration of the past but also a testament to the enduring legacy and impact of the dance team on the community.
The Shirettes Dance Team program has seen nearly 200 dancers participate while at LSE, sharing their love of dance and Knight Pride. The 50th reunion drew an impressive turnout of 80 alumni, from over seven different states, each contributing to the vibrant tapestry of the Shirettes' history. In addition to the alumni, seven past coaches/sponsors graced the event, adding a layer of historical perspective to the celebration. Their presence symbolized the lasting impact of the Shirettes on the lives of those who have been a part of this extraordinary journey.
The Shirettes Dance Team's 50th reunion was more than a celebration; it was a journey through time, a rekindling of friendships, and a showcase of the enduring spirit that defines this remarkable dance team. As the night concluded, the echoes of laughter, the graceful movements, and the shared stories served as a testament to the indomitable legacy of the Shirettes—a legacy that will undoubtedly continue to inspire and resonate for generations to come.
This celebratory event would not have been possible without the support of our volunteers and sponsor.
