After finishing first as a team at the Flatwater Fracas in Grand Island, NE, the Lincoln East Boy’s Wrestling team traveled to Bennington, NE, to compete at the Badger Dual Tournament. The Spartans earned the #1 seed, and in pool competition, they won their first four duals by a combined score of 258-50. In the opening round, the Spartans earned bonus point wins at every weight except for one and defeated Gretna 78-3 and then followed that up with a 57-23 victory over Fairbury. During the third round, the Spartans defeated Ralston 69-3 giving up only one win, before overcoming Elkhorn South 54-21 to advance to the Championship Dual. In the finals, the Spartans faced Omaha Skutt Catholic and suffered an early loss by major decision at 195lbs but generated critical bonus points as Jordan Johnson earned the fall at 220. After a forfeit at HWT, Lincoln East was up 12-4 going into the front portion of their lineup, where Leland Sindel lost a close 4-1 match against #2 ranked Cole Welte. Three straight pins by Meier, Ingwersen, and Shaner put the Spartans up 30-7. Omaha Skutt kept their hopes alive with a 10-8 win over Turman, but the Spartans returned with wins by Toline and Sherlock that sealed the victory. Caleb Schwerdtfeger defeated #2 ranked Clayton Lindley 5-1 to close out the dual with a 39-27 win. The Spartans have earned the team title at this event for four straight years. Six Spartans went undefeated across the five duals, including Scottie Meier, Josh Shaner, Noah Ingwersen, Cole Toline, Westin Sherlock, and Caleb Schwerdtfeger. The Spartan JV team will host their home tournament on Tuesday, January 3rd. The Varsity will travel to Kearney for a dual on Thursday evening, followed by competition at the Norm Manstedt Invitational in Columbus, NE, on Friday and Saturday.

After finishing third as a team at the Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic, the Lincoln East Boy’s Wrestling team hosted their first home dual on Thursday against Pius X. The Spartans came away with a 57-18 victory earning wins from Scottie Meier, Braedyn Rakes, Cole Toline, and Westin Sherlock. Six other Spartans always generated six team points each after receiving forfeits from Pius X. The Lincoln East JV team generated wins from Brady Anderson, Dominic Velasquez, George Campbell, Colton Kuta, Jacob Ondrak, and Zander Zuniga on their way to a 49-37 victory. On Friday, the Spartans traveled to Grand Island to compete in a field that included 22 teams from Nebraska and Kansas. They were pooled with six other teams finishing Friday’s competition undefeated as they had strong outings against Norris (65-12), Waverly (48-25), and Seward (75-6). Their most formidable challenge came against Garden City, KS, where they entered the final weight class needing a win from Scottie Meier to pull out the 37-33 victory. The Spartans closed out pool play on Saturday morning with a 47-18 victory over North Platte and then finished with a 39-19 win over Columbus to advance to the Gold Bracket. In the championship pool, the Spartans held off current #1 rank Class B, Bennington, 35-28, which set up a showdown in the final dual against Norfolk, where Lincoln East came out on top 37-33. Winning 34-33 going into the final match of the dual, the Spartans needed a win by Caleb Schwerdtfeger, who held on to a 6-4 victory to lock up the team championship. This marks the first time Lincoln East has won this challenging event. Three Spartans, in particular, had stand-out performances, including Cole Toline, Westin Sherlock, and Josh Shaner, who all went undefeated over the two days of competition. The Spartans will see action again on December 30th when they travel to Bennington to compete in the Badger Dual Tournament after the holiday break.

As their inaugural season gets underway, the Spartan Girl's Wrestling team will continue to experience several milestone achievements. Coming off successful performances at the Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic and Lincoln North East Invitational, the Girl's team joined the Boy's team to host their first home dual for the program. Libby Kotik joined the Boy's team during face-offs for a match-up against the sole Lincoln Pius X wrestler but eventually lost by fall in the opening round. For the weekend, the Spartans traveled to Grand Island, NE, to compete in a dual tournament with five other teams at the Flatwater Fracas Girls Dual Tournament. Of the six teams competing, Lincoln East was the only one not to have sanctioned wrestling during the 2021-22 season, which put them at a slight disadvantage during dual competition as they were forced to forfeit at least five weights during each dual. In their opening dual, the Spartans lost 54-27 against Lexington and 41-18 against Aurora. In the second and third rounds, they faced the eventual runner-up and team champions falling 60-12 against Norfolk, then 63-12 against a solid Grand Island team. The Lincoln East Girls finished with Minden in the final round and suffered a 42-24 loss. Mileena Notaro remains the sole undefeated Spartan on both the Boy's and Girl's teams, as she finished 5-0 during the tournament with bonus point wins across all five matches. The Spartan Girls will next compete at the Norm Mandstedt Invitational in Columbus on January 5th once the team returns from the holiday break.

After winning the Kearney High Invitational last Saturday, the Lincoln East Boy's Wrestling team traveled to Gretna on Tuesday for their first dual competition of the season. The Spartans defeated Gretna 69-11 and secured bonus points in all but one of their 12 wins. On Friday and Saturday, the team traveled just across the border to compete at the Council Bluffs Invitational. Outside of the NSAA State Tournament, this invitational is among the most challenging as it includes 44 teams from Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, and Texas. Only three Spartans have won individual titles at this event in the past, and the team came away with seven placers in the top eight in their respective weight class. Gabe Turman made a return trip to the finals and finished in the runner-up position, and Josh Shaner and Cole Toline finished 3rd after close semifinal losses. Westin Sherlock finished 4th, having earned his 100th career win on Friday evening, Caleb Schwerdtfeger finished 7th, and Scott Meier and Braedyn Rakes each finished 8th overall. As a team, the Spartans came in 3rd overall behind Millard South and Fort Dodge, IA. In JV action on Friday, the Spartans competed at the Lincoln Northeast Invitational, where they have nine overall places. Zach Dickey was a champion at the 220lb weight class, and Jase Frost and Landon Moser each finished in the runner-up position. Noah Ingwersen and Jayden Carlson each finished 3rd, and Essek McRoberts, Luke Farmen, Elijah Gutz, and Brady Anderson finished in 4th place. The Spartans will see action again on Thursday night as they host Pius X at home and will then travel to Grand Island on Friday and Saturday to compete at the Flatwater Fracas Dual Tournament.
