Most nights, you will have a reading assignment over which you are to take notes.
If we have a Reading Quiz, at the start of class you will get out 1/4 sheet of paper.
You will be asked ONE QUESTION from your assigned reading from the night before.
You CAN use your notes on the quiz.
Each Reading Quiz is worth 5 points.
You can score from 0 - 5 on a Reading Quiz.
We will have around 20 reading quizzes in a semester.
If you have some of the notes, you CAN show me (BEFORE YOU LEAVE CLASS THAT DAY) to earn partial credit.
On days (that you have assigned reading) that we DON'T have a Reading Quiz, you will have a Notes Check. Notes checks will require you to show me your notes from the night before.
Each Notes Check is worth 5 points.
If you have ALL of the notes completed, you will earn 5 points.
If you do not have all of the notes completed, you have missed this opportunity to earn Formative Credit--you will not show me your notes.
A missed Notes Check does NOT go into gradebook as a zero or missing. It was simply an opportunity for you to earn Formative Credit that you missed out on.
You can only score 5 points on a Notes Check--I will not look at incomplete notes. THEY ARE DUE ON THE DAY OF THE NOTES CHECK--NO LATE SUBMISSIONS ACCEPTED.
In AP U.S. History, the value of your Formative Credit score at the end of the semester will be THE deciding factor as to whether or not you should approach Mr. Bargen with a conversation about whether or not your score might go up a point or two at the end of the semester.
For example, if the Formative portion of your grade at the end of the semester is 69% or lower, there is no reason to have that conversation because the answer will be no--there are activities under your control that you could have done during the semester to raise your score on the merits, obviating the need for an adjustment at the end.
Likewise, a superlative Formative score at the end of the semester will be taken into account to positively adjust a student's score.
IMPORTANT NOTE: NO ADJUSTMENTS WILL BE MADE FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE MISSING ASSIGNMENTS, PERIOD. Conversations about adjusting one's grade must begin with, "Mr. Bargen, I have done all that I can do on my end to improve my grade..." Missing assignments mean that that is not the case. Students with missing assignments are not eligible for any semester grade adjustments.
