April 2024

A Message From the Principal

Mickle Families,

With the start of April, we are down to eight short weeks left in the 2023-2024 school year. Despite the short amount to time left in the year, we still have a ton of things to cram into the final days.  This edition of the monthly newsletter highlights many of those events that are coming up this month. As always, let us know how we can collaborate with you in your child's education.

Jason Shanahan - Principal

Counseling Center

School Counselor, Mrs. Hanseling, will be presenting in Humanities classrooms over the next couple weeks. The topic: Look2College. This is a lesson from Education Quest that explores the following questions: What do you want to be? How will you get there? How will you pay for it? After the lesson students will come home with a booklet-please ask them about what they learned and review the booklet with your student. More information can be found here: https://educationquest.org/professionals/grades-6-8-resources/

Mrs. Hanseling has a short 4 minute video posted to her Google Classroom reviewing 7th grade course information. Students watched this in class but it's also available for parents to watch as well. Parents-ask your students to pull it up on their Chromebook for you to view.

Hope Squad is a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program. Hope Squad members are nominated by their classmates as trustworthy peers and trained by advisors. The program reduces the risk of youth suicide through education, training, and peer intervention. Mickle's Hope Squad is: 6th: Zoey, Mia, Sammi, Jed, Mikayla, Lennon, Keira, Brody, Irene, AJ, Quay. 7th: Amiyah, Macie, Morgann, Eden, Holly, Evelyn, Jacey, Ayanna. 8th: Sari, Liatris, Abby & Taya. Hope Squad is organizing Hope Day at Mickle. Hope Day is Wednesday, April 3rd. Hope Day is an opportunity for our Hope Squad to increase awareness about mental health and to prevent suicide in our school and community. Our Squad will be at a table in the hallway at lunch spreading hope and resources information. All students are encouraged to wear Mickle shirts or the color blue on Hope Day.

Health Office

Information for families with a student entering 7th grade in the 2024/2025 school year.

We know there is a great deal of information coming home from school, but we want to especially make you aware of a Nebraska requirement for students entering a public school entering 7th grade.

Families of 7th grade students for the 2024/2025 school year need to provide the following information to the school your child attends – or will attend:

There are many resources available and the school nurse can assist you if you have questions about either of these items.  Nebraska law requires students to have immunizations completed by the first day of school. Lincoln Public Schools extends a grace period for immunizations, allowing families to make necessary appointments and have them completed by the end of first quarter.

Students who have not submitted complete immunization records to the health office by Oct. 10, 2024 will NOT be allowed back to school until immunization records are submitted and up-to-date.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your school nurse at

402-436- 1216 (option 4).

Library

Got eBooks? You do!

Your school library provides many options for students looking for books to read online this summer! One popular option is Sora, which has access to thousands of ebooks for students to check out and read instantly online. You can even access Sora on a tablet or phone, for those long car rides. You can even explore ebooks from the Lincoln City Libraries in Sora. Open this flyer to learn more.

Digital Citizenship Tips

An important part of digital citizenship is treating others with respect when online. The harassment of other people online is called “cyberbullying.” Students are taught to talk to a trusted adult if they witness cyberbullying, either directed at themselves or someone else. Ask your student if they have seen cyberbullying online, and check out Common Sense Media’s website for more information on Cyberbullying (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/cyberbullying).

Computing Services

Testing Season is upon us!

It’s said a body needs 8 hours of sleep every night. That’s especially true during the testing season. Student Chromebooks also need a good night of charging. Please help your students remember to bring their Chromebooks fully charged every day.

Screen Time

Did you know not all screen time is the same? There is a significant difference between “active” screen time (engaging in focused production of content) and “passive” screen time (consuming entertainment media). The American Academy Of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends families have thoughtful conversations around the purposes for using digital media and offers an online tool for creating a “personalized family media use plan.” AAP Media Plan.
