A Ph.D. student position with TA/RA support (stipend plus full tuition) is available in the Department of Civil and Environmental, Clarkson University starting Spring 2023 or Fall 2023. The student will work on the development of nucleic acid-based biosensors for the detection of pathogens in the environment. Desired qualifications include:
1) M.S. or B.S. degree in environmental science/engineering, biological science/engineering, chemistry/chemical engineering, or other related fields.
2) Research experience is not required, but such experiences in microbiology, environmental chemistry, or material science would be prioritized.
3) Good communication and writing skills are required.
4) Determination and enthusiasm in scientific research are strongly preferred.

3-10-2025 updated: (Position filled)"Wang Group has an undergraduate research opening for a project titled "Antibiotic Resistance Gene Analysis in the Septic System." This position is available immediately and can continue through the summer or until the end of 2025, depending on the student's availability.
The research will involve:
Developing DNA extraction methods for water and soil samples for metagenomic analysis
Conducting metagenomic analysis
Performing quantitative qPCR analysis
In addition to gaining hands-on experience in molecular biology and environmental microbiology, the student will also receive training in scientific presentation and writing skills. The student will also have opportunities to participate in manuscript writing and be supported to attend conferences if the outcomes are promising.
Applicants should be at least sophomore standing. Students who have taken BY320 or other biology/microbiology courses (or are currently enrolled) or have prior research experience in a related field are preferred, but this is not required.
