To provide an environment of understanding, compassion, and empowerment for mothers who battle against depression while directing them to helpful resources.
A community of mothers with depression who are not only surviving, but thriving.
MYBAD is a nonprofit founded in Columbus, OH. MYBAD started as a Meetup Group that held support meetings for mothers with depression who needed a safe space to vent or just be. We have grown to a group of 80+ and still growing. We became a nonprofit in an effort to obtain grants and sponsorships for our activities.
What's behind the name? We wanted to have a 2-fold meaning for the acronym because there is often two faces of mothers battling depression. There is the side that we feel is acceptable to others and there is the side that we feel the need to hide. Those two facets are: The acronym MYBAD, which stands for Mothers Yet Battling Against Depression. Also, the idiom "my bad" is a slang term that is used as an apology for missing the mark or doing something wrong. We decided to go with that because oftentimes, mothers with depression find themselves having to apologize for issues that arise due to symptoms of the disorder (i.e. being a no show, forgetfulness, tardiness).
Depression has become an all too common condition, but people still feel the need to hide it. MYBAD is our effort to help mothers take off the masks and express themselves courageously so that healing can begin to take place. We want to give more that just emotional support to these mothers.
