Where does your imagination live?

Welcome to Ms. Polo's website. I am the art teacher at Boyce Elementary School where I teach Kindergarten to Fifth grade classes. In my classroom we explore all kinds of media: painting, drawing, mono-printing, paper collage, fiber and clay.

The most important question I ask my students is "Where does your imagination live?" Even the youngest students usually point to their heads, but a few also point to their hearts. I consider my class a laboratory where students can fully explore this magical space between their heads and hearts.

Invest in your child's Imagination...

Boyce Elementary is a PBIS school with Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. In the art room there is an incentive program called Art Dollars. When students have completed an art project early, they have 5 activities they can choose to do next. For each activity, they can earn a different colored art dollar.

Blue: Copy a Famous Work of Art

Orange: Coloring Sheet

Pink: Create a drawing of your own

White: Read from the Story Library

Green: Image Surf in the Art Library

These activities may change throughout the year to keep students engaged.

The multi-colored art dollar system should ensure that not all students pick the same activity over and over again, as well as encourage them to work independently toward a larger goal.

Students can spend their art dollars at the Art Store at the end of each grading period (4x a year). Everything in the art store costs 5 Art Dollars, but students have to have one of each color. I have asked for the help of the PTO to fill the art store. I would like the students to be able to purchase art supplies OR an original work of art made by a parent, or teacher.

The supplies can be simple things, such as coloring books, a pack of markers, special gel or glitter pens, sketch pads, colored origami paper.

The artwork can be anything handmade. For example, I will be donating hand painted origami birds. I’ve asked another person in the Boyce community to contribute crocheted dream catchers.
