The visual arts program at Clarke Middle School is based on the principles and practices of the research-based “Teaching for Artistic Behavior” method of teaching. The idea is simple: Students are artists and the classroom is their studio. Students are offered real choices for responding to their own ideas and interests to make art. When given the chance to explore their own ideas and passions, students find greater meaning and relevance to their work. This concept supports multiple modes of learning to meet the needs of all students. It is my goal that all students will leave art with a strong capability to solve problems creatively, which is a highly sought after skill in today’s world.
In this model students are expected to:
In MS art, students will explore materials and express their ideas through practice and creative projects. They will document their growth in their digital SeeSaw journal.
7th Grade Art Learning Targets:
8th Grade Learning Targets
I am looking for students to GROW as artists, not their natural talent or skills.. Each student is capable of earning an A in art regardless of their natural talent or abilities. Students should not have homework in art, but they may need to come in before school, after school, during LEADSTRONG time, or check out supplies to take home to stay on top of deadlines, especially if they are absent.
I grade student based on a Standards Based Scale. They get a rating of I, II, III, or IV based on how well they have mastered a skill, or learning target. These will be converted to a percentage so they get a normal letter grade for the class.
IV - 100%
III - 88%
II - 75%
I - 50%
Students’ grades will be broken down into the following categories on Infinite Campus
Studio Habits (50%): These are skills that your student should be able to do by the end of the trimester. Students earn a rating based on how they have mastered the skill. This rating will change throughout as students show evidence of their learning through their writing, talking, and artistic process over many assignments.
Leadership Habits (30%): Students earn a rating based on how they are using Habit 1,3, and 6 in class. This rating will change throughout as students show evidence of leadership. I will also list assignments in this category.
Responding/Reflecting (20%): Students will reflect on their artwork and learning throughout the trimester in their SeeSaw journal. Each reflection is given a rating on the following scale. Students may edit reflections to raise their rating.
