Supporting Student Use of Technology at Home

Best working environment

Have your student complete school work in a common area rather than their bedroom. Having your student visible can decrease off-task behavior. If you would like to see what your student is working on, sit with them and have them give you a tour of their current assignments, etc. Supporting your student in this way leads to a more collaborative learning environment at home.

Check internet history

Devices keep a log of their Internet activity. If you suspect that your student has visited an inappropriate site, you can press Ctrl + H when the Chrome Browser is open to see the history. Students can clear their history, so an empty or limited history of browsing can often be cause for suspicion. If you would like this investigated further, please contact your school principal.

Restrict device usage

While the device is a learning resource, the district completely respects your role as a parent/guardian and will support any decisions you wish to make regarding your student's access to technology. For example, if you wish to set time limits on their usage, or remove the device from their possession when they are not engaged in homework, this can help to remind them that technology is a tool, rather than a toy.

Digital Platform for CKSD

G Suite for Education is a closed system whereby only students and staff have access through their CKSD Google account (username@ckstudents.org).

It includes applications that enable students to:

  • Create projects
  • Create and submit assignments
  • Collaborate with their classmates
  • Send emails to students and teachers

As a G Suite for Education district, we are able to monitor student Chromebook activity through web-based management tools.

The link above provides you with the current available CKSD online curricula and access instructions.

Each student must return a signed copy of this letter to the main office before a Chromebook is issued to them. If necessary, print a copy by clicking the link above. You and your child need to sign the agreement.
