Stuck on a Word

• Think about the story. Check the pictures for context clues.

• Look for chunks in words.

• Look for small words within big words.

• Get your mouth ready for the first sound.

• Does what you said make sense?

• Does what you said sound right?

• Does it look right?

• Try again. Run your finger under the word to blend the sounds.

• Go back to the beginning of the sentence and reread.

Fiction Reading Strategies

• Before reading, take a picture walk to make mental predictions about the story.

• Make predictions about the story based on the cover and title page.

• Read the story. Look closely at the pictures to support comprehension.

• After reading, discuss the setting, characters, feelings of the characters, and the problem and solution of the story.

• Discuss your child’s favorite part. Would they change the ending of the story?

• After a few times reading the story, have your child retell the story to you by just using the pictures as a reference.

• Record / video your child reading favorite stories so they can hear how they sound. You can show your reader how much they have improved!

• Share recordings / videos of your reader with family and friends!

Non-Fiction Reading Strategies

• Make predictions based on the cover.

• Do a picture walk to think about what information is in the text.

• Think about what you already know about the topic.

• Think about what you want to learn about the topic.

• While reading, be sure to go over the bold vocabulary words, the picture captions, and any charts, graphs, or maps.

• Discuss new learning. Make connections to other learning you have.

• Use the glossary and table of contents to further explore the text.

• Reread.
