What is LAP?
LAP stands for Learning Assistance Program. Here at Brownsville Elementary, our focus is Reading. We assess every student in the Fall, Winter, and Spring to check progress with various grade level reading skills.
How long will my child receive LAP Reading services?
We serve students in LAP as long as there is a need that is reflected through our progress monitoring and benchmark assessments. Once the data shows that students are at grade level reading skills and able to maintain those skills independently, they "graduate" out of LAP. If we later see that they need us again, then we bring them back. The goal is to make progress and not need LAP for reading intervention.
Is LAP considered Special Education?
No, it is not part of Special Education. It is a reading intervention program.
Will my child be missing instruction from their classroom teacher to attend LAP?
We carefully work around classroom schedules to pull students out for reading intervention during a time when they are not receiving core instruction from their teacher.
What will happen with Reading Intervention, should we go to remote learning? If we were to go totally remote as a school, the LAP Team would create remote learning LAP groups. Group information would be sent out through the communication app that each grade level uses (ClassTag, ClassDojo, Bloomz, etc.)
