Gifted and Talented 

Welcome to the Gifted and Talented page! 

The CJCP Elementary Gifted and Talented program allows students to participate in a small group setting while completing various STEAM focused activities. The program promotes and encourages higher order thinking skills, problem-based learning, and social-emotional development. 

Qualification Information:

Each year students are re-evaluated through our CogAt testing platform. This is one of the criteria points that is reviewed for entry into the G&T program. 

Please see below additional criteria points that may be taken into consideration:

• Parent Recommendation 

• Teacher Recommendation 

• Reading Level (if applicable)

• Benchmark Scores (Math/ELA)

• NJSLA Scores (if applicable) 

Conversation Tips:

My child is upset about not getting into the G&T program.

• Validate their feelings: Acknowledge that it's okay to feel upset and that the situation might not feel fair. 

• Listen: Let your child talk and cry, and don't try to fix anything. You can also try walking away for a short time and then coming back with new ideas. 

• Provide perspective: You can remind your child of their strengths, like recent academic or non-academic successes. You can also help them shift their focus by talking about what they were excited about and what they might imagine doing instead. 

• Give them a sense of control: You can wait until they're ready to try to come up with new ways of thinking about the situation. You can also try to help them build frustration tolerance and normalize struggles. 

My child finds the G&T program too difficult.

• Talk to the Teacher: Tell your child to discuss their concerns with their teacher. Remind them to ask questions when they are confused. 

• Set-up a Meeting: Have a meeting with your child and the child's G&T teacher to come up with strategies together 

• Problem-Solve: Complete different problem-solving activities together at home; intensify the rigor of the problem as they get better
