Symbolism

The food and objects that are utilized in the Jets' Mek' ceremony is chosen to represent something important in the child's life. 

Jets' Mek', also known as the Maya Baptismal, is a ceremony in which the child is carried on the hip for the first time, and its objective of this is for the baby to be able to walk fast and move quickly. 

It is performed on infants, specifically females when they are 3 months old and males when they are 4 months old. 

Food symbolism

On the interview done to Mr. Faustino Yam ( 2 April, 2025), he explained that a boiled egg, also known as je',   is given to the child as a symbol that the mind of the child be open for understanding. This means that the child will be able to easily understand things taught to him/her. The act of giving an egg with the corn tortilla will teach the kid to do the matàn. The matàn is the act in which the child will be able to go to a home and accept the food given to him/ her. This would be when there is a resado, for example, when the bixx is done, the tamales given to the persons are their matàn. The pumpkin seeds (Xtoop') symbolize the opening of the mind and flourishing of intelligence. This means it helps in developing more knowledge that helps in being able to understand things more easily.  The chaya (chay) symbolizes to able to divide. The word divide is used in a form that the child will be able to understand what is right and wrong. Also, it means that the child will always share, an example, teaching their friends a topic that he/she doesn't understand. The Pinole ( K'aj) symbolizes that it would help the child to remember. This refers to the act that the child will have a good memory of everything that he/she does, and never forget it. The food symbolism represents something special to a child's life as it has a significant meaning. 

Objects' Symbolism 

When doing the interview with Mr. Faustino Yam (2 April 2025), he showed us that the baby is given various items to hold. This included the machete and other agricultural items for the male, which would signify that the child would be able to do the farming and be able to use the items.  Also, for the females, it is similar; she is given kitchen utensils, which means that she will be able to use the kitchen utensils to cook food in the future. This indicates that the child will not have problems when cooking, as she would be able to prepare her food using the tools. For both females and males of they are given the bible to hold, as it symbolizes for him/her to learn to read. This means that the child would be able to read in order to be a good Christian. They are also given other items such as a phone, a laptop, and other objects that would help them in the future. This means that they are preparing the child for the future, as technology is advancing.
