Belize's flag is one of the few national flags in the world that depicts human figures as part of its design. This makes it particularly unique in vexillology (the study of flags) (Flags.com, 2023).
The design of the flag was chosen through a national competition held in preparation for independence. Many designs were submitted before the final version was selected (Belizehub, 2025).
The colors of the flag are also the colors of the country's main political parties: the People's United Party (blue) and the United Democratic Party (red) (World Population Review, 2023).
The Belizean flag was recognized internationally on September 21, 1981, when Belize was admitted to the United Nations as its 156th member state (RJ Travel Agency, 2024).
