The long term goal of the urban forest is sustainability: the maintenance of ecological, social, and economic functions and benefits over time. The Department of Urban & Park Land Management can achieve this by; Demonstrating through example the standards of professional care and installation methods on all public lands. Protecting natural resources by upholding the City of Clemson’s Vision Statement, Public Tree Ordinance and Land Use regulations. While providing educational and volunteer opportunities that enhance and elevate the community spirit.
Departmental Goals
Uphold Public Tree Ordinance No. CC-98-003
Assess all public greenspace and green infrastructure needs, prioritize goals and address with data based management strategies
Develop and implement a Green Infrastructure and Urban Forestry Plan for the City of Clemson
Assess horticultural resources and community benefits
Assess and implement strategies laid out in the City of Clemson’s Comprehensive Plan
Develop and implement a strategy for invasive species mitigation
Conduct a comprehensive tree inventory
Define natural resource benefits important to the City of Clemson and provide analysis of benefits
Develop and implement a biodiverse planting and replacement plan
Complete and publish a preferred plant and tree list
Improve departmental organization and incentives
Develop a tree management division dedicated to risk assessment, inventory, and regularly scheduled pruning
Reevaluate management activities, priorities, standards, and specifications
Stay informed and adopt current green-industry standards and practices
Develop community outreach programs including educational and volunteer opportunities
