Design and Technology, D&T, in schools develops children's skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food. It encourages children's creativity and encourages them to think about important issues. As students progress through this subject, they may be given the opportunity to focus on specific aspects of the subject such as product design, food technology, engineering, systems and control, electronics, textiles and graphics. The core theme that runs through each of the D&T strands is creativity and imagination. Students learn to design and make products that solve genuine, relevant problems within different contexts whilst considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. To do this effectively, they will acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and will use additional disciplines such as maths, science, engineering, computing and art. D&T allows students to actively contribute to the creativity, culture wealth and well-being of themselves, their communities and the world they live in.
The impact of D&T could influence different parts of students lives such as;
Future employment
Practical life skills
Understanding technology, people and the environment
Team work
Creativity and design
Production
