At CIS we believe our student-athletes learn a great deal by participating in interscholastic athletics. Our athletics programming is all-encompassing as we offer learning opportunities to supplement our curricular Physical Education (PE) programming from Early Childhood right on through to graduation. Our athletics department strives to put our school’s principles into practice by viewing sport as another context where deep, rich learning can occur. We look to instill conceptual, competency, and character based learning in all of our athletic programming while embracing our community principles through kindness, local and international partnerships, sustainable practices, and always operating with the assumption that we all have the best intent at heart. By providing a variety of athletic experiences for student-athletes, our program helps students develop important habits and attitudes that prepare them for adult life.
Additionally, athletic competition naturally fosters school spirit and develops pride in the school and community for participants, students and spectators. Consequently student-athletes and coaches are expected to exhibit the highest level of conduct, both on and off the playing fields, as they are representatives of their team, school and community.
Indeed, student-athletes and coaches are expected to demonstrate proper respect for one another, opponents, opposing coaches, teachers, officials, spectators and the community. Competitive athletics provide excellent opportunities to teach our student-athletes the virtue and significance of the CIS mission.
We value kindness. Our kindness is illustrated in all of our interactions: with our own children, with others’ children, with families, with staff, and with administrators. How we communicate with each other is emblematic of our collective kind and caring spirit.
We are strongest when we work together, when we share ideas and resources, and when we partner with the greater Cayman community. A spirit of collaboration not only makes our community stronger, it makes student learning richer by connecting stakeholders in exciting and innovative ways.
We take into consideration long-term impacts when making decisions. This applies to decisions about programming as well is to our personal and collective behavior. We live on an island with limited resources and our environmental stewardship is essential in keeping it viable and healthy for generations to come.
We trust that members of our community have what is best for students at heart. When we have disagreements about what is best for children we talk with people, not about people.
