The 'Core' comprises the three elements which lie at the heart of the Diploma Programme and which draw together and enhance the skills and information acquired in the six subject areas.
All Diploma Programme students participate in the three elements that make up the core of the programme:
Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
The Extended Essay (EE)
The three elements of the core (TOK, CAS and the Extended Essay) were introduced by the original curriculum designers of the Diploma Programme as a way to educate the whole person.
These three elements of the core complement each other, working together to achieve the following common aims:
to support, and be supported by, the academic disciplines
to foster international-mindedness
to develop self-awareness and a sense of identity.
The IB DP Core concepts are requirements. All students must complete all three Core requirements adequately in order to be eligible to earn their IB Diploma.
