French 1A et 1B - Mme. Klein
l’année scolaire 2025-2026
Goals for this year: students will develop confidence in various areas of language learning – communication, culture, connections, comparisons and communities through participating in activities that develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
On this sheet, you will find important information about expectations for this class. Please refer to this sheet posted In Google Classroom under RESOURCES - digital Interactive notebook.
What you can expect from your teacher:
I will strive to design lessons to be interesting to include a variety of strategies to address various learning styles.
I will be available for extra help so that you can be a successful learner. Please make arrangements with me so that I know when to expect you.
I will maintain communication with your parents/guardians, so we can all work as a team to ensure that you do well in this class.
What your teacher expects from you:
Come to class on-time and prepared everyday to participate actively in class activities and discussion.
Wait in the hallway for the teacher before entering the classroom. After greeting le professeur, quickly find your seats, sanitize your workspace and prepare for class to maximize our time together!
In order to maximize our time together, please consider using the bathroom facilities at the beginning of class and at the end of class. Please wait for the captain to turn off the seatbelt sign before using the bathroom. Of course if there is an emergency, please ask immediately.
There is no food or gum permitted in class. Only bottled water is permitted.
Assignments will be completed neatly, in a timely manner and handed in on the due date. If you have an excused absence, promptly make-up all work upon your return per school guidelines.
Ask questions when you are unsure or don’t understand something. Always raise your hand and address personal issues before or after class time.
Everyone is required to show respect for each other, be courteous, support and encourage each other. Please understand that something you may say, either positively or negatively, can make a difference!
Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. If a problem cannot be resolved through a verbal warning and/or a meeting between the teacher and student, then a phone call will be made or e-mail will be sent to the student’s home. If the disruptive behavior continues, consequences may include the following: referral to guidance, meeting between teacher/student/parent, after school detention and/or dismissal from room to Administration.
Honor code: Remember that you are part of a school family and that you will be expected to show Pirate PRIDE in everything you do: Perseverence, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Empathy. In addition to not giving or receiving unauthorized information during formal assessment, students are expected to produce THEIR OWN work at all times. Online translators (ie, google translate) should be used like a French-English Dictionary, to look up a word or two. The expectation is that Google/AI tools will not do your assigned work for you. These translators do not require students to use or develop their language skills in any way. Work completed with the aid of an online translator/AI tool does not reflect a student’s competency and is not based on the student’s personal knowledge of the language, especially at a beginning level. It is quite obvious to the teacher in a level 1 course when one of these services has been used. If this is the case, the student will be asked to re-do the assignment, with ten points deducted. If it happens a second time, the work will not be accepted, resulting in a zero for the assignment. This applies to all AI sites, on-line translators and bots.

Grading
This class will use a variety of assessments including: tests, quizzes, oral presentations and evaluations, projects, class assignments and homework. Essential knowledge will be assessed by quizzes, tests and projects. This will be weighted 70% which comprises 30% for quizzes and 40% for tests. Projects could be placed in either category depending on time involved with production and rigor. Homework and graded class work assignments will be weighted as 30% of your grade, with classwork comprising 20% and homework 10%.
Assignments will be accepted late, but for partial credit. This will be determined how late the assignment is submitted for credit.
Students will be assessed two times during the year by a pre and post assessment. The data from these tests will be used to analyze strengths and weaknesses to inform instruction and ensure consistency within the World Language Department. These two exams will be in September and then again towards the end of the year. The one at the end of the year will count as a test grade, recorded in Genesis.
Complete each assignment to the best of your ability. Strive for accuracy, ask questions and work hard to “strain your brain”!
Always remember that you represent "la crème de la crème" - the best of the best!
