The Accelerated Reader Program (AR) is a software platform we utilize to evaluate comprehension of independent reading. Students should take quizzes on books that they have read and which are within their reading range, according to their quarterly STAR results. Approximately 75% of the books on our library shelves have comprehension quizzes in the AR Program.
Students have a monthly reading goal measured in a certain number of points, given to them by their teacher, but with their agreement. These points are earned from taking AR reading comprehension quizzes of the books one has read. Each book has been assigned a numerical value in points by the Renaissance platform, depending on the length, vocabulary, and language complexity that it contains. Students earn the same percentage of the possible points on a book as they score on the AR quiz, beginning with 60%. However, for our school, we consider satisfactory any score of 85% or higher (80% for short picture books).
AR Bookfinder is a handy place for finding out the AR reading level and points of books in the program. AR Bookfinder
The STAR test is taken at the beginning of each quarter by students from grades 1-5 who have passed the STAR Early Literacy test. The STAR test on Renaissance accommodates the level of the questions it asks of each student, depending on how quickly and with what accuracy answers have been given. Thus, STAR is able to give us an estimate of the current reading levels (ZPD) of the students. Reading levels are found by clicking on the myON or AR button within Renaissance (in AR, click on Progress below the student's name).
This is a great option for elementary and Early Childhood students to read digital books for reading pleasure. There are also books apt for collecting information for reports and projects.
On myOn, students will receive recommendations based on their individual interests and reading level, yet they can also browse the myON library to choose from among the 11,000 + books available.
Many of the books on myOn have an AR quiz. Taking the myOn quiz of the book first is a great self-check. If necessary, reread the book before taking the AR quiz.
Elementary CIC students (Gr. 1-5) and their parents may view the dashboard of progress that gives AR reading quiz scores, monthly goal information, and the student's bookshelf of all of the books that the student has taken quizzes on while studying at CIC. Also, the types of books being read, whether fiction or nonfiction. Log in with the student's AR username and password.
